I'm having a problem with a NIC The computer is conected to a router connected to a cable modem. It had been working fine then all of the sudden it won't connect any more. I have checked all connections and have uninstalled NIC and reinstalled have even tried a new NIC. What shows up if I check under: control panel-network connections-local area connections-status-support:

Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)
Address type: Automatic Private Address
IP address: 169.254.15.114
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: blank

I have other computers connected that work fine the show:

Internet Protacol (tcp/ip)
Address Type: assigned by DHCP
IP address: 192.168.0.*
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

If I click repair on the problem computer it has a pop up that reads

The following steps of the repair operation failed:
renewing IP address

Please contact your network admin. or ISP.

I tried moving to a new router and network that didn't help still same problem. Could the problem be the motherboard. I have aldo repaired the install of the operating system (WIN XPpro). And updated the bios on the motherboard.

It sure looks like a bad patch cable. Try another and check the LEDs at both ends for connectivity.

Also be sure that the router setup is allowing enough IP addresses (scope). Most default to 5 IPs. Add a sixth and one inevitably drops off.

Is it possible that there are two PCs on the network with the same name?

no I checked for that I built all the computers myself and name them differntly. This is one I built for a friend and it worked fine for over a year then it just quit working. I then brought it to my house to see if different router and cables would help and even put a different NIC in and it all comes out to the same result.

I have a extra hard drive I thought I would try putting it in and doing a fresh install to see if perhaps the operating system is corrupted.

For what its worth I did a fresh load of Win XP on a spare hard drive and everything works great. It must be something was corrupt in the windows program. Bill thanks for the help.

That seems to fix most problems. I hate to recommend it, but there it is.
