I recall reading "somewhere" about system and access violation erros that occur when Win98 systems have too much ram (512 and greater). I also recall there was a fix for this situation (one which did not require removing some ram). Does anybody recall the solution? Please email if you have it. Thanks a bunch.

Good luck with this link. Perhaps I'm just a bit slow, but I left well enough alone and run with no more than 512 meg of SDRAM in Win98se:

I just added 512meg to a win95 unit. IT shows a total of 528meg and have no problems. Thinking about putting another 256meg in just to see what happens

Is this RAM limitation limited to win 9x series or does it also include Win2k?

just the win9x series. 2k can handle up to 4gigs of ram

I think the fix has something to do with setting up your [vcache] settings in the 'system.ini' file. You have to set it manually because Win9x doesn't allocate the cache properly at or above 512M. I haven't seen any problems without the fix.

And now that I've read the above link I've just realized that I posted this for no reason. My bad.

I know RAM is dirt cheap now but what are you running on 98 that would benefit from that much memory?

Running 768mbs of RAM in my 98se system. Just open msconfig/system.ini scroll down to [vcache] click the plus and add MinFileCache=xxx00* and anouther line for
MaxFileCache=xxxx00*

(*)xxx= amount of phsical RAM
xxxx= ram plus swapfile amount
I guess a random number could work in the second line as long as you dont execede that amount but I set my minimum and max swapfile settings. My swapfile being at 768mb min/max swap plus 768mb ram my lines look like this.
[vcache]
MinFileCache=76800
MaxFileCache=153600

win2k advanced server (i think) can hold up to 32GB memory, it was either that or Win2k DataServer
