I've been given an older PC which I am trying to setup for my daughter to use on my home network. The PC is running Win98se.
I burned a CD with AIDA32 on it to install so I could get a hardware configuration of the system. When I load the CD the system tells me it's an audio CD, (it works fine as a data CD on my system).
I tried a couple of commercial software CD's and they are recognized as data CD's.
All of my homemade CD's have the same problem.
I burned them on an HP cd-writer 9500 series using the HP CD-Writer software that came with the drive.
Any ideas why my CD's show as audio only?

link (http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpcdwriter22100&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpg40380) for RecordNow - is that the burner software that came bundled with the drive or system? I'd suspect the software so try to learn more about it - Adaptec's a bit tricky as well when burning audio and data CDs and using them on other machines
could be your problem.....
- never even heard of RecordNow but never bought an OEM machine - best bet is to try to get your hands on NERO, or some fully functional software to burn your CDs? :t

The software came with the burner. Someone else has suggested that I try to burn a CD at a slower speed, (ie: 1 - 8x). The CD on the old systemuis an 8x.

8x CDROM drives might just so be from a drive generation that doesn't read CDR media at all. CDRW compatibility came in somewhere around the 16x to 20x generation.

Do you know where I might get a definitive answer on that? I seem to remember once finding a site that was dedicated to CD technology but I can't seem to locate it today.

I found it....

I'll do some research there and get back if I come with something.
Thanks

Is there an option to choose data over audio when you go to burn? You might need to load a reader such as Adaptec UDF Reader or INCD UDF Reader. Generally these help you to read cdwr discs on systems without burners and their software but it might be worth a look.:t
You might want to make sure you have the latest version of that software also. Try these links and see if they help.

Found this:
Subject: [4-37] I inserted a CD-ROM but Windows thinks it's an audio CD
(2002/03/18)
Sometimes a Windows system will get into a state where it thinks that a CD-R or CD-RW data disc is an audio CD. This is very peculiar, since the CD-ROMs aren't "enhanced" discs with both audio and data content. In some cases the problem only happens with a CD recorder -- a CD-ROM drive in the same machine will work correctly -- or vice-versa.
One situation where this is reported to occur is with a JVC XR-W2080 with v2.06 firmware (or an equivalent OEM version). If you have the Roxio UDF reader loaded, whether manually or as part of installing DirectCD 3.x, the problem will occur. Removing the UDF reader, either with Add/Remove Programs or renaming \Windows\System\Iosubsys\Udfreadr.vxd, is said to fix the problem.
Another occurrence has been reported with Toast 3.7 on a Mac. If a disc was recorded with Toast as CD-ROM/XA instead of CD-ROM, Win98 would see the disc as audio. Win95 and WinNT worked fine on the same disc.
One user found that replacing the IDE cable made the problem go away. Another found that using MODE-1 rather than MODE-2 helped (check the advanced recording options in your software).
Another user got the problem to go away by uninstalling "Wavelab".
Somebody else found that the problem went away on a SCSI device when he disabled wide negotiation and limited the data rate to 16MB/sec.
The bottom line sounds like the causes and solutions are various. There is no one solution that will get me to end-of-job quickly. For what I am trying top achieve I think I'll focus on networking the system to my LAN first and pulling software on to it that way.
Thanks ...g
