I upgraded to win2k service pack2 from 98. The boot and shutdown times seem to take for ever, Even when I log off its take a while. Often my system hangs. While adding a new hardware also i have some trouble.
Only 1 partion of my drive is NTFS the rest are fat 32. Anyway to convert to NTFS with out loosing the data? Do i need to convert to NTFS?

upgrades are the worst. the best thing to do would be a clean install. SP2 is old already. get up to date with SP4.
You really need to run winxp to take advantage of HT.

Compared to 98, 2000 does take a long time to startup, shutdown and log off. That is because it is aimed at being a secure networked OS, whereas 98 is a home OS. There is a problem though with your installation I think, as it hangs etc. Make sure you download the latest drivers for ALL your kit, especially the mobo from the manufacturer, and install them. The Windows ones sometimes don't work effectively.
In terms of the time taken, how long to boot 98? How long now to boot 2000? If I get the 2 times I can tell you whether it's normal or not.

Once, my dad got the WinME upgrade to put on Win98 for his laptop and desktop. And when I tried to use it... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! GOD HELP US!
I never found out what happened to the upgrade... it just dissapeared one day, hmmmm..:D

that sounded like you did an upgrade, not a clean install.
win2k does take longer because it is loading a lot more services than win98. winxp seems faster because it allows you to logon while services are still loading in the background. again, you should be running winxp if you plan to enable HT. that might be messing you up with win2k. Although win2k supports SMP, only winxp officially supports HT.

NO,nono
What I did was format my C: and then install win2k sp2. So its a clean install. Should I disable HT, Or is there some patch?
Ohh and Logoff times are as long as 4 minutes. Shut down takes way too long, for a system lime mine I feel that this is way too much. should I reinstall the whole thing again?

there is no patch at this time. you should disable HT if you insist on running win2k. please see the link ^above^. you might have to reinstall win2k also.
