I administer a small network of 23 workstations and two servers. I have had problems with some software conflicting with AV programs (Norton and McAfee). Anybody know a good choice to cover the entire network? (We use TCP/IP and NetBUI and have a DSL conection, if this makes any difference.)
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I don't know any specifics for networking this package, but I really like it for a PC.
PC Cillin
Updates are automatic, a small window pops up every few days offering a small file to update virus definitions.
You don't have to beg and plead, hunt for 30minutes to get updates.
I have Norton from work for Free, I have McAfee on another machine, both ****.
PC Cillin is NOT a resource hog like the other two.

PC-cillin is my choice as well!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I'm running W2000Pro on a network and there are a couple of problems when using PC-cillin on the LAN. (Norton and McAfee have the same problem.) I talked with Trend today and was informed that their engineers were working on the permanent fix, but here is the work around.
Disable the POP3 Scan, this will NOT leave your e-mail un-protected.
If you are locked out of PC-cillin because you are the administrator and not a "Power User", then this is the work around:
ERROR ON WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL / ACCESS PRIVILEGES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Can be seen on External Solution Bank editor solution ID 6999
Title: Get error message "Cannot launch PC-cillin with current privileges" when installing to another directory other than the default.
Problem: This error message sometimes occurs when installing PC-cillin to another directory other than the default. This will happen too if you are not given the privilege of at least as a "Power User".
Solution: For Windows 2000
1. Go to START | RUN and in the RUN field type REGEDT32 and then click the OK button (or Enter).
2. Go to the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE folder and double click the SOFTWARE folder and then double click the TREND MICRO folder.
3. With the TREND MICRO folder highlighted, click on SECURITY in the menu bar and the PERMISSIONS. Once the PERMISSION properties are available you need to put a check mark on the two ALLOW Boxes near the bottom of the Properties Windows.
4. In order for the updates to download correctly, change the permissions on the PC-cillin folder under Program Files, to allow 'users' to write and modify files.
5. Restart your computer.
As of yet, PC-cillin is the best and only AV that seems to be the most compatible with W2000Pro. If you want more info on PC-cillin or the other Trend Products, www.antivirus.com/products/ (http://www.antivirus.com/products/)
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately my network is NT4.0 / Win98. The powers that be here are very reluctant to change what works. (However poorly it works.)
I have heard about problems with PC-Cillin also, though I have no experience with it.
I know there are better/more powerful programs out there, that have just never been mass-marketed.
Any other advice?

I was going to say PC-Cillin as well....didnt know it didnt play well with NT4. Check it out anyway...it's light, unlike Norton and MacAfee. Just be sure you only use one....one only installed on each machine, whether it runs or not.

Well, that's three for three. Sounds like I should give it a shot.
(No, I had not heard about specific problems with 4.0, just that it had problems generally)
Thanks for the info.

I've got a copy of PC Cillin here that came with my Asus mobo. I'm just wondering, if I install it, will I be able to stop it from loading/running on startup? AV and games don't mix http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Also, is it likely to be shareware or the full product?
Thanks

Dudster, yes you can shut it down on start up. The version that comes with the asus mobo is a full version free trial. It last for 4 months or so then it's $8 a year. I like this av progam a lot. I don't have any problems running it & playing games online.

Glad to hear so many of you have had good results with Pc Cillan, myself I wasn't so fortunate. Pc Cillan failed to detect virii on my machine on two seperate ocassions.
The last one being around christmas, my machine was acting strange. After scanning with the latest virus dat file from Pc Cillan no virii were detected. After installing Nortons AV, it picked it up right away, infact I had 3 types of virii. After that, I threw out my store bought version and the Asus version that came with my board.
I like nortons and yes after scanning my resources drop badly, but I just reboot.
It seems to me it's a matter of personal preferences, and maybe a couple of AV appz

I have used Norton for years myself. I have actually had it miss (the same virus) more than once. Thanks for the info on PC-Cillin. Anybody have info on some of the less well known programs?

Hate to tell you, but there isn't any AV program out there that will catch EVERY virus, trojan, or worm! I do know that Norton missed more than PC-cillin, and that PC-cillin stops malicious pranks (buttons comes to mind) and Norton or McAfee doesn't.
Panda is a great AV program, but I haven't used it enough to personally recommend it.

In order to obtain the ICSA On-Demand/On-Access Anti-Virus Product Certification on Windows 2000 systems, AntiVirus Expert needed to detect 100% of the viruses currently known to exist "in-the-wild", as well as detect 100% of the ICSA Lab's test suites, which included a polymorphic virus test set and those viruses known to be common infectors and have yet to be named to the WildList. Additionally, ICSA Labs will be continually testing the certified AntiVirus Expert product every month against their latest virus test suite to ensure the product has been updated for the latest viruses and other malicious applications.
AVX is the best AV I have used, nothing has ever slipped past it and they update it CONSTANTLY. It even have modules for P2P apps like netmeeting, yahoo messenger,MSN messenger, Mirc and ICQ...and a ton of other features. I don't see why more people don't know about it or use it.
