I gotta put up a sticky on this. I'm tired of typing it over and over.
1. All PCs must be in the same workgroup.
2. You must have shares established on the Win2K/XP machine.
3. Win98 PCs must be logged on using Client for Microsoft Networks as the Primary logon in Networking - none of that "Cancel" stuff!
4. The username and password used on the Win98 machines must be known to the Win2K/XP machine. In other words, you must either log on to Win98 with the same username and password as Win2K/XP or add the username and password in Win2K/XP using the Users and Password/Groups applet in Control Panel.
If anyone has something to add, please chime in. It's Sticky Time! :D
Sorry Bill. Figured it out. just trying to understand windows 2000.
I had to put everyone into the user file so they could connect and share my stuff. It wasn't the workgroup, I had that already done when I installed it. but there names under user names.
I put the msconfig from XP version in so I can control the start up programs. little by little i'm getting it.
Thanks:D

Some antivirus software or internet security software like Mcafee can interfere in your networking stuff, I know mcafee will reject any ping attempts. Try disabling any antivirus or internet security software in addition to the checks listed above.
I use AVG antivirus. I also got rid of msconfig from XP. I didn't like it. I found that everything I put in and don't want to startup. I just right click on the icon in the bottom corner and there is a place to shut it off from the start up menu.
also I found out when you ad to your users list for the network to watch it closely. it may change to administrator name off of the user name. which won't do much except start and fresh new screen without the the programs and games you downloaded. Just as if you reformated the hard drive and reinstalled windows again. But just going to the users file and putting it back on your name changes it all back.
