What can I say? I just don't like the way Microsoft designs things.

Glad to be back, Thanks!

I like the new reminder board at the bottom. Good feature. Sysopt stands alone once more...at the top!

I'm going to try it again and see what happens, now that i know how to fix it when it screws up. anyway, i hope no one though it was mad about the little mishap, i just blamed it on windows be a piece of ****, and I did read the disclamer, it's no big deal.

Here is the image I quickly threw together for testing purposes. I'm gonna do up a nicer one.

<IMG SRC="http://216.154.125.155/boot.gif" border=0>

I have been unable to get the progress bar to work at the bottom, at first I thought it had locked but after a couple secs Windows booted normally. I'm going to use paint to save the file in it's final form and see if that works next.

How do you get the loading animation to work on the bottom (yours is fire... how do you get it to show the progress?)

Very Cool. I know about the logox.sys or logoy.sys or something like that in Windows 98 that you can hack, but yours' is much better.

I just made my image and stayed away from the animated line. I didn't change the progress metre slot except for adding the flames. Loaded 'er up and it worked!

The only thing I have to change in mine is the height of the flames. The tips of flame that extend into the line scroll with the line. I have to cut them down a bit is all. Everything else works like it should.

Cheers!

That Win 2000 table just went in the other night. I have a few to post yet. I'm just gathering them up right now mostly. WinY2K is still pretty new to me. I've been running it since May and most of that time I was in a battle with the ACPI. (Another story)

Hey beemer, your tweaks are really cool. You are very smart.

Beemer
07-20-2001, 11:28 PM
I can't take credit for being all that smart. I just find what interests me and if I think someone else might benefit from the knowledge, I post it where it can be found. Usually someone has already done most of the work for me. I work out any bugs and publish it to the Web.

That's all. Thank You for the compliment.

Hey Mntsnow! Do your animations work? I didn't have any problems so I didn't have to discover the fix if they don't.

Cheers!

Beemer
07-20-2001, 11:45 PM
Here you go Hallam.
To change the colours of your animated line:

<u>Go To:</u>
HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Colors

In the right hand workspace look for:

"ActiveTitle" = 10 36 106
"GradientActiveTitle" = 166 202 240

e.g.

ActiveTitle = 0 0 0
GradientActiveTitle = 255 0 0

This gives a gradient from black to red.
I'm not sure if this will effect the Startup animated line or not. Anyone know what the technical word for that line is?

Cheers!

Beemer

Can you get into safe mode? Go get your original that you saved and put it back into the system32 folder.

Did you make a 16 colour bitmap or a High Colour(16bit)??? Only 16 colours will work.

Let me know what happens.

Hopefully you read the disclaimer at the beginning of the page and did a backup of the Ntoskrnl.exe file.

The effect takes place upon first boot.

Cheers!

did we every find out how to change what it says in the "start" button? i heard it wasn't possible, but I'm sure therer is a way. I know you can do it with a Hex editor under win98, but i always thought that it wasn't possible under 2K, or where is says windows 2000 professional sideway in the start menu thing. I'm sure it on those sites, but i didn't get time to look throught them, been busy working on my start-up screen thing.

I found the Start menu graphic using Resouce hacker.
It's in the explorer.exe in the WINNT folder.
Bitmap, 157,1033

I'm going to try the same process for changing this as the logo screen. I think it should work.

Beemer

I saved the new image as a 16 colour bitmap into explorer.exe .
I couldn't save explorer.exe into the WINNT folder as Windows was using it. Couldn't do it in Safe Mode either. Luckily I have a dual boot with Win98. I booted into 98 and transfered the file from there.

<IMG SRC="http://stopslipindustries.com/beemer/start.gif" border=0>

it should be possible through the CP, just remember not to try to do it from within windows, hehehe, done, that been there. Anyway, I'd try this too, but sonce i dont' have a dual boot, i don't think it'll work, and DOS is iliminated under 2K, so i don't see how it is possible, since it is in a file that is already in use. hhhmmm, have to think on this one for while. hehehe, i guess you could configure windows to run using a different file, like explorer1.exe, the change the explorer.exe file under safe mode, then configure to change back to use explorer.exe. BUT, i have no idea how to do this, and uh, well, i don't really want to try untill someone knows it's possible for sure. hehehe, sounds like fun, but i have WAY to many files that I haven't got around to backing-up yet.

Hey Beemer,

Here's one possible way to get some of those changes in place on files that are always in use. You don't necessarily have to use Safe Mode to do it. I've found that you can just take advantage of the Service Pack installation mechanism to do the dirty work for you.

Here's the process I used to update EXPLORER.EXE. This requires that an exploded copy the service pack files be installed locally on the HDD.

1. Make a backup of the compressed file you want to modify.

2. If the files were copied from a CD, you will have to remove the Read-only attribute.

3. At a command prompt, EXTRACT -r EXPLORER.EX_. This recreates EXPLORER.EXE.

4. Now use Resource Hacker, or other tools to edit the file as desired.

5. At a command prompt, COMPRESS -r EXPLORER.EXE. This recreates EXPLORER.EX_ for the service pack to install.

6. Re-install the service pack.

Voila! Your changes should now be in place.

I find this method works pretty well for a lot of things like this, and with the cavernous sizes of todays hard drives, I don't mind having the service pack hanging around all the time. Besides, I don't know about you, but it seems to me that it takes forever for the OS to switch in and out of Safe Mode.

Hallam,

Thanks for the welcome.

Yes. As long as EXPAND.EXE and COMPRESS.EXE are present in the C:\WINNT directory (or somewhere in your path, by default they're in C:\WINNT), it will work just fine in W2K.

has anyone ran into any problems as a result of turning off the windows file protection? Any corrupted system files? What are the real risks of anything happening?

Well, i read on further and found that i do not have to disable the windows file protection since i have SP2 installed. So, next time i will read the instructions all of the way through and then post a question.

I like hacking stuff!!! hehehehe

It looks like hotdogs scrolling across an open flame. The progress metre is now maroon in colour as it builds and it gives the appearance, at first glance, that the flames are moving.

I'll stick with this one I think.
