I updated to Windows Media Player 9, and now when I select a media file whilst browsing in Windows Explorer, the bar on the left changes and a small media player comes up. This causes insane amounts of lag and makes it hard to browse. How can I disable it?

That's called the Media Bar:

You can disable that in Internet Options > Advanced > Multimedia.
