Which card would you say is the better value? The 9800XT is at a whopping $500 and the 9600XT is at $200, which (to me, atleast) is more affordable. This card will be used for heavy gaming, but taking into account that money is a big problem.

Go ahead and buy the 9600XT when it comes out? Or save up longer, wait 'til the price drops on the 9800XT?

I would get the non-XT version of either one *now* because the cards are not appreciably faster.

price lower yes, worth the price of the XT, no. He said not to get them *now* because they 'are not appreciably faster'. Meaning they dont give enough of a bonus to their speeds VS how fast the 9600P/9800P is now

What draws me to the 9600XT is that it will come with HL2, or so I heard. If it does, I'll be paying $150 for the vid card and $50 for HL2. If I buy the 9600Pro and HL2 by themselves, it'll come out to around the same price.

My only worry is, when will the R9600XT become "old by hardcore gamers' standards (as said by Bigjakstaffa on my other thread (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=985357#post985357) about the Ti4200)"?

Not until Direct X 10 at the earliest methinks, and given that ATM the number of DX9 based games is a mere trickle, i would bet that thats quite some way off

Glad to hear that. Wouldn't want to buy a piece of hardware only to have it become obsolete really fast.
