well i have a system that i built by myself, and its very loud. i would like to make it quieter like a compaq where you can barely hear if the computer is turned on or not. thing is, i dunno what is causing the noise. is it the cpu fan? hard drive? or the video card fan? or is it all? i think its the cpu fan, so any suggestions on a real quiet, i mean REAL quiet cpu fan for my cpu. btw, i have a PIII 800EB processor, slot 1.

www.7volts.com (http://www.7volts.com) also has a lot of information on quieting a computer. As for the loudest component, it's usually the CPU or power supply fan. I made my power supply quieter by getting rid of the grill, and taking the case off. You can see the first mod off my project page here: www.fordpinto.homestead.com (http://www.fordpinto.homestead.com) . I have since replaced the chicken wire with a wire grill though (the whole page is somewhat out of date http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ).

If your board supports it,
Speedfan.
What it does:
SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors fan speeds and temperatures in computers with
a known monitoring chip. Its main feature is that it can control the speed of the fans
according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise and power consumption. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Fanspeed:

This program was originally conceived as a part of a project called Fanspeed which I'm involved with with my friend Tim Hughes tjh30@cam.ac.uk.

Basically, Tim was thinking one day "Wouldn't it be nice to actually be able to hear myself of the raging of my dual fans [he runs dual Celerons in a BP6]" So he started to write a program to control the speed of his fans. I joined in on the project to provide a cooling solution and a GUI. Cooling is obviously important for fanspeed because cooling your cpu allows you to run the fan slower and thus quieter. VHaltD is the cooling only spin-off from fanspeed.

is this safe though? to like lower the fan rotation speed? won't the cpu get hotter then because its funning slower now? (the fan that is) i wouldn't mind trying this program, but i wanna be sure about this program before i use it.

Don't by a 50x Delata CD-rom. I bought it beacause it was cheap, so I got what I paid for...........

It makes enough noise to wake the dead http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I do not own stock in Panasonic, but the way to run a quiet, cool system is with a quality case and quiet, efficient fans: Panaflo fans are among the quietest. I run 6 in a full size aluminum case and the noise level is very low. When the air conditioner is on in my room, I cannot hear my computer fans. When off, I can hear them but not very loudly.
