I want to know everyones opinion on which cpu is better suited for online gameplay. Anthlon or Pentium 3? Does it matter? What does everyone think? Apostle 83 07-27-2001, 05:28 PM Well, in online gaming the most important factor is not your processor, it's your internet connection. If you have good ping times, you'll be able to play as if you're really in the environment being simulated. To be honest, I'd take a Duron 700 with DSL over a 1.33 TBird w/a 56k. So look at the internet connection as the bottleneck in online gaming, not your processor. Cody 07-27-2001, 05:29 PM Well, I have a Pentium III Coppermine 800EB (yes, all of that) and it is GREAT for gaming at all (my 56k kind of limits the online part, but T2 and UT still run great on it). I don't know if you can still get this chip (it was only sold for a short while, because they were kind of expensive, but the Coppermines are very very nice) 4DrRukus 07-27-2001, 05:37 PM I have a Cable connection and my ping is fine. It's just that i heard that P3's are better at gaming than the Athlon, and Duron. Then others say that AMD is just fine. Who do I believe? Barney 07-27-2001, 05:42 PM Athlons are better for gaming than P3s. Not much, but they're better. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Dputiger 07-27-2001, 05:45 PM Believe the Athlon. If you want details to back it up, check here: www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) www.sharkyextreme.com (http://www.sharkyextreme.com) Those three are all decent websites that have tons of benchmarks of various processors, video cards, and configurations. You can check various processor configurations there. However, broadly, I'm going to say this: The Athlon is a much better performer than the P3 at all price-points. A 1.33 Ghz Athlon will absolutely destroy a 1 Ghz P3 in all gaming benchmarks and is likely to be found for a cheaper price. Even the Duron will win against a non-optimal P3 (ie--a P3 on a 100 Mhz bus, vs. the 133). I recommend Athlon over P3 for all types of gaming, bar none. People who have listed problems with Athlon gaming systems generally have sub-standard system configurations to begin with. Caveat Emptor. SysOpt.com
