How do I cut a picture's background using photoshop 6.0?

You can use the crop tool or the magic wand or manually select the area. Depends on the pic.

The best way to do it is using masks. You can edit what you want knocked off.
Sadly it's not an easy thing to illustrate using just text. Try reading up on it at www.informit.com (http://www.informit.com) they've got a free Photoshop book there. Version 4 or 5 but the concept's the same

Just to give you another option, you can use the magnetic wand and highlight around what you want to keep. Then select Inverse, and erase what's now selected.
