Hi folks
After a lot of trial and error, I finally managed to set up a 3com home net work between my laptop and desktop, now it actually works, but one last question if I may.
I have ADSL broadband, set for the desktop, and the laptop set to use it from the desktop, - with folders I just enable sharing, but how do I enable sharing on the dial up connection, I can't see it from the laptop, I'm sure its quite easy, but I just can't sus it.
Thanks

Why would you want to share the dialup Applet?
You cant run it remotely from another pc.
What exactly are you trying to do???

what are you doing, dialup or broadband? are you talking about sharing the broadband connection? that would be ICS, but you should really look into getting a router. since you have a laptop, you should consider getting a wireless nic and router.

He has ADSL so why use dialup except as a backup?
I think he may be referring to ICS.

My connection is ADSL dial up-ppp connection, what is ICS? I just thought that if I am using the Laptop through the desktop, I would be able to go online via the desktop connection.

You need to setup ICS on the desktop and setup the laptop to connect through it.
ICS = Internet connection sharing.

I would still invest in a router. in order for your laptop to connect, you MUST have the desktop on and connected to your ISP. it's a hassle. you can put the login information into the router settings.

Thanks for your efforts lads, I fanally solved my problem - Iwas lead by the wizard to believe that I needed to install my internet connection on one machine, and use the other machine as a slave - wrong. I have simply installed the modem to run on both and just switch usb connection as I need it, so simple. This network is the hardest thing I have tackled so far, dont know why my ASUS MB A7N8X deluxe gives three network connections that uses a bridge, I eventually disabled two of them and just use 3com - success, wont need a router after all Thanks again.

I should have posted you over to this url - network bridge can be a real pain in the bum.

Go to dos prompt
In Windows 2000 /xp -> start / run / "type" cmd
In win9x ->Start / run / "type" dosprmpt
when you have an ip address you need to check say 10.4.7.1
use
ping 10.4.7.1
if you get a reply you know its up (working) - (connected)
no reply - you have an interface or subnet problem or a firewall could be blocking your icmp echos (ping protocol)
You a Scotsman Mac???
Where you hail from?
