How does the cpu, northbridge chip, southbridge chip, RAM, and Bus interface with each other? Must all the data from the CPU go through the northbridge chip to get to the southbridge and memory? And data from the southbridge to the bus and controllers?

I have a question for you. How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? ;)
All of those parts are interdependent. Data doesn't flow from one to the other. Sometimes, data bypasses the CPU going from the hard drive to the memory, but it always goes through the southbridge on the way (that's where most peripherals connect). The northbridge houses the memory controller, so data goes through there too.
Basically, the NB controls the RAM and is controlled by the CPU. The SB is the main device hub.

Thanks, fishybawb. The diagram is very informative. I know there are many nuances but for most people this provides an excellent start point. As for ones and zeroes, there lies all the answers, miss one and you are done.

If we as wanna be techs could understand the way data is used and how used (i.e. binary and how it must be handled thru a ram chip) we would then begin to understand some of the failures we have from time to time.
