Hi,
Is anyone using PC Anywhere?

I would like to know how much control I would be able to exert on a remote PC with this software.

Would I be able to make the same changes as if I was sitting at the keyboard of that Machine?

Any tips or if anyone has had a good run with a similar Program please let me know.

Thanks

Nodnerb2

I want to use this sort of program to access and operate a PC in New Zealand whilst I am in England. My only way of connecting will be via a Dial up Connection that rarely exceeds 50K.Will this be possible or a waste of time?

Thanks again.

Yep... you will have full control and you will be able to make changes as if you were sitting in front of the PC.

Another pgm (and free as well) is VNC.

Yes I use PCAnywhere also...

Just one word of advice...if any of your changes require a reboot make sure you have PcAnywhere configured to automatically launch with the booting of the machine or you will not be able to log back into system! (not that I have done that before http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif lol )

Just a note....using PCanyware over a 56k can be a lesson in futility.....but can get your remote working again.

I tech support job for about a year and a half and we supported all of our remote pc's with PCAnywhere via dial up connections, max speed about 33600kbs. It seemed fairly reliable. One suggestion, put a pcyanywhere remote "be a host" icon shortcut in your startup, so it wil automatically go back in waiting mode, should you have to restart it. Also, when using the mouse it would lock up periodically, especially when right clicking. Being proficient with keyboards is way more reliable than using the mouse with PCAnywhere. i would recommend learning all that you can.

I left a word out in previous message. when I say you need to be proficient with keyboards........I meant to say be proficient with keybaord commands.

Hi nodnerb2,
In answer to your E-mail:
Hey Thanks,

Do you think it will work with Win 98 at one end and Win ME at the other? Version 10 includes Windows ME

Beemer,
Thanks for the response. I failed to understand the full implication of the fact that me e mailing you would deprive others of the info I requested. I apologise and will do my best to post all future responses to the forum wnere they were posted originally

No need for apologies. I'm glad you understand. This little message and variences there of, is posted every now and then for informational purposes for all to read.

Back to topic. If you dual boot, and have need to access both O/S from time to time, you will have to load an instance of PC Anywhere on both O/S's.

Great program and the only thing you can't do with it is view the desktop wallpaper image on the remote computer. I use PC Anywhere for teaching others at a distance. I can disable the cursor on the host computer or both host and remote can have focus on the mouse. The student can watch where my mouse goes or they can show me what they know. Ral handy in a teaching atmosphere.

Cheers!

Thanks Beemer for the info. I have ordered the Software off the site you pointed me to in your post above. I got PC Anywhere Version 10 and Norton System Works 2001 for $34US. As I have never used PC Anywhere before you could well see me posting more questions on this subject until I get the hang of it.

Thanks again

I work for a large hospital corporation in the IS dept. and PCAnywhere seems to work just fine. Most of our users don’t have it so we fly blind, but for the ones with it, it's great.

I have just got an e mail back from #9Software telling me that they want $62.25 Shipping to send the stuff to the UK. This must be how they make their money. I thought their prices were too good to be true

Do you know anyone in the states that could buy it for you and ship it? Maybe that would be a monetary work around.

Cheers!

Thats what I'm doing Beemer.

They are happy enough to drop ship it to my Buddy in Fla and he will send it on to me. I should get it in about 10 days or so if UPS can deliver it ontime and he forwards it fairly quickly.

Remote Admin (http://www.radmin.com/) is another program you might want to check out. Remote Administrator (http://www.radmin.com/)

I've never used the program (or any program like this), but it was recommened to me at one point so I thought I would pass it on.

It seems to be a pretty decent program, even over a dial-up connection. Try it out and see what you think.

Vnc is also an alternative
I use it on my network at home to monitor and update my rc5 systems and it really does quite well, it's not the greatest but it is fairly simple and compact and it will run on just about anything ive got it on 95,98,me,and 2000 on processors ranging from p90's to 1ghz machines and the only problem seems to come from the win95 machine when I need to minimize some applications.
