In response to internet.com's recent hijacking (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum17/HTML/003989.html) of the right-most 2" of SysOpt's webspace (and the annoying "in-your-face" animations that go with it), I've been on a quest to increase my knowledge of how banner ads work. My ultimate goal it to be able to recover the space occupied by that side ad, but I thought I'd share an interesting tweak that I've discovered to at least control the animations, without loosing functionality of ActiveX and Java for the rest of the web.
Internet Explorer already provides the user the ability to control certain websites through the use of "Zones", but there just aren't enough zones to be able to control cookies, ActiveX and Java independently for different websites.
If you're not comfortable editing the Windows registry, don't read any farther... I don't want to be held accountable. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
There are 5 "zones" stored in the registry under;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings\Zones
and they appear to be listed in order of their relative security level.
0 - My Computer
1 - Local intranet
2 - Trusted Sites
3 - Internet
4)- Restricted Sites
To add more zones, simply create another key named "5" and add all the values that are listed in all 4 of the other zones.
You can name the new zone(s) whatever you like under the string value for "DisplayName" and also add a "description" of the zone that will be displayed on the Internet Security Properties dialog box. If you know what you're doing, I believe you can even add your own custom icon, but I just used one of the icon values from another zone.
The first new zone I've created gives SysOpt.com all the privileges of the "Trusted Sites" zone; except JavaScript is disabled... thus animations on the side banner have been disabled.
I hope someone else finds this tweak useful. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
