I have this weird problem where all the desktop shortcuts to HDs, Burner and DVD not working in XP. I've deleted all of them recreated them with same result.

If the computer is in XP style, then there is a desktop cleanup wizard. In my experience, it just keeps popping up saying "you have unused icons on your desktop". When I see this, I just click on them all and it stops. There might be things in the wizard to automatically clean up bad links, especially to the CD drives where there isn't likely to be the same CD in there all the time.

It appears to have been a registry corruption because when I imported the registry I'd exported just after a clean install the problem vanished. :)

Doing better than I am. I have no problems with the harddrive shortcuts working. But my optical drives always come up with Taget box not valid, make sure path and filename are correct.
Strange thing is, they are.
