Look up some benchmarks mate... :S Benssax 09-27-2003, 03:46 PM I havne't really seen any reviews on the SE models's It looks to be about the same as the 9600 pro or so. bob05 09-27-2003, 03:49 PM The 9800 SE is better. Really it is an underclocked 9800 NP (with maybe a few missing pipelines  ) but I still think it will beat out a 9500 Pro/9600 Pro. :t too_much 09-27-2003, 03:56 PM I've got a Tyan Tachyon 9600pro (Big sexy heatsink :D) running at 520/610 stable, and it's still behind the 9800, but when you compare prices, you see why :p For value for money tho, I would get the 9600pro, sapphire perhaps, not default ATI. If however you're the "I don't do anything at all except play computer games" type, then get the 9800 at great personal expense :D bob05 09-27-2003, 04:05 PM Originally posted by too_much I've got a Tyan Tachyon 9600pro (Big sexy heatsink :D) running at 520/610 stable, and it's still behind the 9800, but when you compare prices, you see why :p For value for money tho, I would get the 9600pro, sapphire perhaps, not default ATI. The 9800SE does beat the 9600 Pro by a nice margin, so the extra money is justifiable. Get the 9800SE. :t too_much 09-27-2003, 04:06 PM oh ok..... I duno what it's like over there, but in the UK our price differences are fairly vast.... Are you sure you are comparing the 9600pro to the 9800SE ... not the 9800NP or 9800Pro? too_much 09-28-2003, 05:56 PM it appears I was =\ I apologise to anone I caused confusion or anything, it was late, I'm an idiot :p Sorry :( mike0381 11-05-2003, 12:01 PM Hey guys, just obtained an ATI Built 9800se AIW for £160 (I live in England) which is only about £30 more expensive than a 9600 Pro. I was thinking for ages about which one to get! And 9500 Pros are nowhere to be found. Ran 3DMark2001se and got 14161 marks, is this good? Wasn't expecting much of a performance cos it's an SE, but is soo much cheaper than the real 9800 or 9800 Pro! My system is an XP 3200+, 1gb PC3200 RAM and MSI K7N2 Delta motherboard. Planet 11-06-2003, 06:42 PM I've got a 9800SE AIW, and mine softmodded fine to 8 pipes, so its basically a 9800PRO now. Not bad value for £130.. :D I say if you've got the choice between a 9600PRO and a 9800SE at similar prices go for the 9800SE. Its a good card anyway, and you've got to chance to get it up to 9800PRO levels.. I don't know what the chances are of succeeding though, maybe i was just lucky. darkstalker39 11-20-2003, 11:58 PM The 9800 Se is the best hands down bang for ur buck. It is only 147 dollars cheaper than the 9600 pro and already wa better by a lot. As is said it costs 30 more now it is better. Get the 800 and be happy. ichorid 11-23-2003, 10:25 AM so the 9800 se is just a cheapo version of the 9800? but it has tv out and all that... for much less money hows this softmod thing work then, i think i fancy myself a 9800 se if they overclock so nicely. is it basically just a rom flash? jamil5454 11-23-2003, 10:37 AM there are two versions of the 9800SE. the 9800SE was intended for asian markets only and i would guess its a way for ATI to make some money off the R350 GPUs that didnt have full working 8 pipes. there's the sapphire 9800SE, which has 128bit mem and a 4pipe GPU @380 mhz. this model is the one at the same price range as the 9600 pro, but i doubt it will beat the 9600 pro since it has a 400mhz GPU instead of the 9800SEs 380mhz. both GPUs are very similar. there is also the powercolor 9800SE which is the same as the sapphire one but it has a 256bit memory bus. this is the only version that has the chance to be modded to a 9800/pro. since it is around $230 - $250(US), its very close to the price of a 9800np and i would just get that because you'll have a guaranteed 8 pipes. The gif image on the first page of this thread shows the performance of a MODDED(to 8 pipes) POWERCOLOR 9800SE!! the sapphire 9800SE can only be to 8pipe-128bit. I would go for the 9600 pro. This should clear up some questions you might be having: http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/faq.php ichorid 11-23-2003, 01:44 PM ok thatnks it makes sense now ;) Yoshi 11-23-2003, 11:01 PM Originally posted by Planet I've got a 9800SE AIW ATI makes a 9800SE All-IN-Wonder? Someone Stupid 11-24-2003, 01:17 AM The majority of 9800 SE's do NOT make it to even 9800 stock, much less Pro as there are problems when the other 4 pipes are enabled. They aren't disabled just for a budget version of the card for us, they are disabled because ATI can get more profits if it can still utilize some bad chips that otherwise would have to be tossed. So they get more money per wafer as you can sell the good ones as XTs your regular yield ones as Pro's and standard 9800's and the a good bit of the "rejects" on a wafer as SE's. So if your looking to get a 9800 Pro out of it, you might as well save up another 50 or so and get a Saphire Atlantis 9800 128 DDR with samsung ram. I haven't heard of one failing to go to Pro speeds if the flash is done right. Just running stock though the 9800 SE will beat out a 9600 Pro.
