What do you get in these various packages. I assume Retail box is the same as off the shelf at a COMP USA or Staples. But what am I not getting in an OEM or White Box? Thanks

OEM:The hardware and Drivers-that's all.
Retail:Hardware/Drivers/Software(additional software,games,utilities,etc.
A lot depends on what your buying,for instance,say you want to buy a CDRW.The OEM version won't have a good software package with it and you'll have to go out and buy it.
However, if you're buying a video card,you can get the OEM version and download better drivers off the Net for it.Hope I helped...DawgTuff.

With video cards you may not get all the features with an OEM card that you would with a retail card. Some retail cards that have tv out features do not have the tv out feature on their OEM cards.

what you can get is a lot of agro, OEM= original equipment manufacturer, and is only legal to be sold to them, if you want more info go to Classifieds2000.com or amazon.com
auctions check out their conditions for legal sales of products.
If you do use these products you only get the basic hardware and maybe a driver, as for back up without the OEM's registration you may also experience trouble getting help.

as welsh wizard pointed out OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. When you get something in an OEM package you get the card or drive and it's drivers....normally that's all you get. A 'retail' package gives you those plus bundled games, and other pluses. OEM isn't bad if you just want the product....and usually it's cheaper....and about the only time that the warranty comes into question is with CPUs.
also....as far as support goes, you'll have to rely on support from where you purchase the product from. It's usually only retail products that carry direct support from the original manufacturer. So far instance, if you buy an OEM video card from a local computer shop, they HAVE to support the product. That is an 'understood' agreement that they have with selling it in the first place.

I never bought a "white box" item but from what I observed, of online resellers and at comp-shows, some of them do differentiate between OEM and "WhiteBox". At one reseller, I saw their list for the ATI 128 Rage vidcard that included OEM, WhiteBox and Retail packaging. Different prices. I also observed these white apparitions appear at comp-shows now and again...
What I'm thinking is… Get Ready….. the "white box" is basically the retail package in a true-to-earth white box.

a little add on here,
the law may be different in the States
But in New Zealand when I sell a new system we have built I can include oem upgrades in the way of
sound cards
video cards
hard drives
software
that are marked OEM
if the buyer comes back 3 weeks later and say's I should have included say Coral Draw 8, by law and agreement with main supplier I cannot sell an OEM legally, to stay within law it has to be the retail version, It suck's so I have way around this, normally the system then develops a mysterious fault that requires a refund, and we then sell system back out with extras added in ( paper exercise but it keeps us both within the law)
If we get caught selling OEM's that are not part of a system our suppliers can cut us dead, which would put us out of business even if they didn't prossecute for breech of our contract with them!

It is only illegal to sell OEM software. It is okay to sell OEM hardware.

As you say if it's software , offical view here any software included with OEM hardware makes it illegal, plus your main supplier has final word if he decides to cut you off for selling OEM hardware against the agreement you signed with him as an OEM systems Builder. As I sead it might be different in the USA
