what i should bye
a hp cd writer internal 179.00 2*read 2*write with 10 cd's or a sony external tape back up
with a 10 gig tape for 149.00 parellel port
i don't know which is better..and i also have a scanner and printer so i would assume that i need another parellel port?

no doubt about it: the CDRW. That is probably the HP 7200i CDRW. I have seen it for $169 w/o any cdrs. You have the advantage with the cdrw of being able to read and write to the disc. unlike the tape where it could pretty much only be used for backups. CDR's are pretty cheap depending on what bulk you buy them in. I get 50 pack spindles for $44 or so which give you a cdr for under a $1. the tapes cost a bit more than that, and arent as fast.
With the CDRW drive you can backup your files and make copies of you music cd's. There is just way more you can do with a CDRW drive over a tape drive.
