Ho Helpers,
Am having problems setting up file sharing on a home network.

I am getting my ip's from a cable internet company(through an old Synoptics Lattishub2813) however the 2 computers(both w/win98) have different subnet masks. This I think must be the problem, because each computer can see itself in network neighborhood, and they are in the same workgroop and they are both connected to the internet.

I also can't ping either ip from the other.

I had this same setup with differnent computers before and was able to get the lan working easily.

Can you help me,

if your ISP is assigning IPs, there isn't much you can do. you could try static IPs, but you would eventually be conflicting with someone else on the network.

why don't you get a router and put both of the systems on that instead? then you wouldn't have to pay for the second system's IP. I'm not sure if you get them for free, but I gotta pay extra for each system.

I don't have to pay for an additional ip, but i would have to pay to get a router.

even if i can't get file sharing to work, why can't i ping the other. If i could do that, then i could set up a webserver, or ftp server to move files.

different subnet masks

That's your problem right there.

Routers are cheap now. It would give you the sharing you want, plus increased security.
