Thanks to members input, I've been able to track down the problem. According to Western Digital, the "Cannot find operating system" error message has to do with deleted or corrupted files and requires booting into Windows (98 in my case) using the DOS boot disk. Hey, great! Guess what? Mine's been gone since we moved into our new house a couple of years ago. How can I create a Windows 98 DOS boot disk if the original or created disk is missing?

You can also go into the control panels of a working 98 system and under add/remive software, there is a tab to create a startup disk. Good luck

In the alternative, run a Search of the Forums here at SysOpt and you'll find the instructions for making a boot disk 100 times!
Good luck!

PS: daveleau's solution should work.
