Is there any programs out there to speed up or clean up windoze ME because it has got very slow over the past few months. I have reinstalled drivers for mobo/graphics/sound etc.... but its still gone extreamly slow. Now i know i really need to reinstall WinME again but it takes to much time to put all my progs back on. I also realize my spec is a little on the slow side, but it has never run as slow as this b4 using ME.
If i'm playing music over mediaplayer it takes about 10secs to change to another track if i select one, music jumps and games are down to about 8 or less FPS at 800x600 @ 16bit colour. Such games as Soldier of fortune and Hitman: Codename 47.

I get 1165 from 3Dmark2000 and 2169 from 3Dmark99.

Spec:

AMD K6/2 450
Jetway J542C Mobo, UDMA66 (ALi Aladdin V5 Chipset)
192MB SDRAM (1 x 64Mb PC100 & 1 x 128Mb PC100)
Voodoo 3 3000 Tv-out AGP
40Gb Seagate Barracuda III ATA100 (@ UDMA66) 7,200 rpm
Creative PCI128 Sound Card
Diamond SupraExpress 56e PRO External serial modem
Pine 44x UDMA33 CD-ROM
Mitsumi 8x2x CD-R
Middle Tower ATX 300Watts

Any advice on how to get it back up to speed would be appreciated.

Thanx RobUK

Sorry I am not familiar with winME, but have one suggestion. It may be your worth while to invest and buy a program that can clone your system example: Norton Ghost. So next time you have to reinstal the os and programs, set it up and make sure its running fine then make a clone image and save it on hard drive if you have space otherwise burn it on a CD. I use Ghost4.0 which came free with my motherboard, and I dual boot with win98/win2k. Cloning has saved me many hours of reinstalling.

Hi,
I am running Win ME and it does seem to need more TLC than earlier versions to keep it running sweet. I dump my Temp and Temp Internet Files every day or so and manage my Cookies fairly tightly with AdSubtract. About once a month I do a de frag and optimisation. This sems to have kept the probs down to a minimum.

Have you tried WinOptimizer 2000 www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,48249,00.html (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,48249,00.html) or System Sentry? www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,70161,00.html (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,70161,00.html)

I use McAfee Uninstaller which has a quick clean as part of the program (15 bucks).

I also use Window Washer (shareware - 15 bucks after a month) http://www.webroot.com/washer.htm which, with the added plugins works extremly well at getting rid of all of the garbage with one quick click.

AdSubtract for cookie management.

You also might check what is loading at startup. Run msconfig from the run command and click on the startup tab. Uncheck any programs you don't need loaded at startup and ok and reboot.

Hope this helps!
