What kind of memory does a ATI RADEON 9800 128MB have???

i have been reading the posts about 9800 > 9800pro and was wondering if i buy the ATI radeon 9800, would the memory ok to change it to a pro?

anybody own a ATI radeon 9800 and converted to 9800pro and it worked?

what kind of memory should i look for?
since it is not Sapphire...

You can't tell what sort of memory it has until you get it. For that reason, you should look for a non-SE Sapphire (rare these days) or try to be happy with a standard 9800. It's still a great deal.

I believe the Sapphire cards (what you would want) use Samsung Memory. No clue if anyone else uses the same stuff.

Yes, the 9500-9800 they use Samsung chips. The 9800 series comes in 2.8ns/3.0ns/3.3ns The first ones used the same mem as the pro's 2.8ns. They then moved to 3.0ns when they dried up and now are at 3.3ns. Supposedly (Rumour) they got a good deal on a huge lot of this samsung mem. after a customer canceled order. No co. was named. So thats why-its cost effective of course. In the past they have used Hynix aswell as Elixer and ifineon (sp?) or somthing its called. So it varys in other segments of their line. This one could change too but since the introduction of the SE models sapphire NP have been dissapearing. Lots of vendors are sold out. I dont know if sapphire stopped making the 9800 and continued with pro line and SE only or whatsup.:t

Sapphire are the only sure fire users of Samsung i know of off top, i have heard of other cards having it, but it seems to be a case of 'the picked up a batch of Samsung RAM somehwere and then went back to the usual supplier'.

9800 8 pipes (slowly dissapearing)
