Please can anyone help me.. I think basically for now I need a wiring diagram. Intitial problem arose when on switching on the PC ..nothing - at all happened. ie, no pwr up. Checked plugs/wires / fuses etc... all ok.... decided to check fuse in PSU - thats ok... so decided to check wiring from switch. Here starts the problem..... I located the wires coming from the switch to the point of connection on the M board. I pulled of said wires/connectors - thinking that it was a block connector on the pins.... it wasnt ! I have pulled of several wires, well, six to be precise , off the m board.....and now dont have a clue where to refit them! They consist of the switch/pwr wire - the spkr wire - the HDD LED wire and others that are not marked. Basically theres about 10 pins - none of which are marked on the M Board as to where they should go! So..... if anyone can help, Id really appreciate it!!!!!!! That would get me back to square one at least - trying to suss the pwr up problem. The machine is a 6 year ( roughly ) old TIME machine ( dont laugh!) Any more specific details you might need Id have to be asked what you need for me to give them. IF anyone can help..... youd save my life!!! THANKS in anticipation....... regards - Mike

Hi.....thanks for the reply..... the question re the motherboard though.... Its difficult to tell just what it is! I can tell you whats written on it if thats any good.... its got : 91 DO 35718
MS 5182 Ver 1
N 1996 ( <which I think may be the year! )
I have the thing on the floor in front of me and I really cant see anything else on it.... I know it wouldnt be an expensive one ... its the one that was in the machine when I bought it...and TIME are known for churning out cheap stuff..... ie, most everything is ON the motherboard....sound / video etc ( as opposed to being separate cards fitted )
Th only other thing written on the machine is TIME 228 G 82362-50-228
I think those numbers"may" be relevant...... but theres nothing else written on.
I hope this info helps....( but I doubt it!)Let me know anyhow if you will.....
Thanks again
Mike

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_list.php

find your chipset type and click on the link for it on the link provided and download the file then u can look at the manual to see where the plugs belong

MS-5182 Manual (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_detail.php?UID=230)

The case power switch on a ATX case is momentary, so you can use a screw driver to touch the power switch pins on the mobo to start up with. This will let you know if the case switch is bad. You dont need any of the other leads hooked back up to tshoot the power on issue. If it wont power up with the screw driver your problem is somewhere else. I would start with the power supply. Then disconnect one device at a time till you find the problem.

*Check all your connections.

Hi - thanks for those two replies..... A couple of things..1, How do I find out "what chipset I have" ???
and ...I clicked on that link and so far cant find anything that matches....but will continue....

As for the switch.... I did think about shorting the pins.... the trouble is as all the wires are off at the mo. including the ones from the switch - nothings going to happen. I darent plop them on the mobo in case I blow something.

I cannot understand WHY theres nothing on the board showing where they go ! real stupid or what!

Anyway....Any more help would be appreicated while I keep trying....
Oh, on that link I clicked on ..it mentions socket A and socket 478 - trouble is mines a socket 7 -- if that makes any difference.....

Please let me know.....
Thank you
MIke

From the manual:

"Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

The MICRO ATX AL11 mainboard is a high-performance personal computer mainboard. This mainboard supports Intel® Pentium® processor/Pentium® processor with MMXTM technology, AMD® K5/K6/K6-2, and Cyrix® 6x86/6x86L/6x86MX/MII processors. This mainboard combines leading edge AGP ATI® 3D RAGE PRO Turbo technology in graphics and ENSONIQ® ES1371 PCI Enhanced technology in audio. The mainboard also supports three 32-bit PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) Local Bus standard slots.

The mainboard uses the highly integrated Aladdin® 5 chipset to support the PCI/ISA and Green standards, and to provide the Host/AGP bridge. The Aladdin® 5 chipset integrates all system control functions such as ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). The ACPI provides more Energy Saving Features for the OSPM(OS Direct Power Management)
function. The Aladdin® 5 chipset also improves the IDE transfer rate by supporting Ultra DMA/33 IDE that transfer data at the rate of 33MB/s. The mainboard also supports the Hardware Monitor Controller as an optional function. This function includes: CPU/chassis/power fan control, CPU temperature detect and protect, and system voltage detect."

Please read the manual.

You can get drivers here:

Since I wrote the last "reply" I found more info from that link - including what youve "copied" in the last post ( thank You )....
I also found wiring diagram info which identified those wires I was after - though its not exactly clear on the Positive and Minus but I "think" ive sussed that.
SO.... all being well.... ive yet to pwr it up... but Im back to my original problem of No power up at all..... Im going to short the on/off switch, as I say , the fuse is ok, but I think its likely to be the PSU. I know they do fail, not that Ive had one -- but I'll let yyou know what happens ( thats if Ive not fried myself!)
Ok thanks again then ,

Hi, thanks for that - but how do I do it???
Ive tried shorting the pins/switch and it hasnt worked.. my next step was to start checking the output voltages from the PSU... unless anyone can think of anything else...

try reseting the cmos if the switch is not the problem
I just read thru the original post and , d94 has a point. The mobo's 6 yrs old, and so is that cmos battery, so it could be weak or bad. Worth a shot to replace it, they're only a buck or two. Doing so, will clear the cmos settings in the process, which has been know to fix your symptoms.
Be sure to remove the power cord from the power supply while replacing the battery or clearing cmos.

Added: You might give this Sysopt article (http://www.sysopt.com/articles/troubleshoot/index.html) a look. It illustrates a method of testing the ATX power supply.

HI again, thanks for that link - what an excellent article !! Im going to try these things before I go to bed !
Incidently, the part about the POST board.. thats excellent too - trouble is, that link doesnt work. ( http://store.yahoo.net/binarygear/index.html
Do you have any idea where I might get such a thing...? My sisters PC hangs on boot up 9 times out of ten !!!! Thought it might be an idea to try that.
As for mine - I'll try those things, including the battery ( first!) and let you know.....
By the way , I was looking at PSU's on a website... and the cheapest ( 19-20 £ ) was a 300 amp one.....whereas the one thats in it is only a 145 amp. I know its probably got the most basic / cheapest one in it... but does it matter - if it comes to it - what type I put in?
Thanks again fo rthe inputs.....

I'm not one who uses a POST card. But, if your interested, try here (http://www.pctestpro.com/post/pcipost.htm)

but does it matter - if it comes to it - what type I put in?
The type matters, ATX . As for its rated output ,watts, you only need a 250- 300 watt power supply for that system. We at Sysopt preach about getting a quality name brand power supply is a must.
