this is probably the wrong Forum but anyways ,
are Microsoft SP's worth it ,
there are updates everyother day and service pack out the a*s
so why bother when there are people like this guy (http://www.grc.com) which are not intrusive and send nothing to Microsoft i may be paranoid but i'm sure he knows better ,other than a bulky install which keeps track and can install without your permission
ANd this Guy is Pretty on the ball
Any opinions are welcome

The above links are to Steve Gibson's www.grc.com site.
I am still not sure what to make of him and his website. In many ways it has been a valuable resource giving advance warnings about existing vulnerabilities and what to do about them.
The ShieldsUp test, when going through my dialup router, will give different results every time. The ports open are always the same but the report on stealthed ports can be completely different on tests that are 5 minutes apart. A scan from AuditMy PC (http://www.auditmypc.com/), on the same PC, will show all ports closed. It does not report on stealth.
I've not seen any evidence of harm being caused by his advice and I'm sure that his advice is generally beneficial if you can cut through the ego that shields his site.
His qualifications are commonly derided by "industry security experts" but he must have something on the ball, as his book, I noticed, has forwards written to it by Bill Gates and Peter Norton.
EDIT: I hasten to add that Steve Gibson does not advise against Windows Updates.

Shields up is good and fun site to hit. Plus it gives you some good info. I personally update windows every chance I can get, unless I read that there is a messed up patch.
I have worked on too many systems that were not patched - hence the reason why I was there.
The more defence the better.
Yep, they are worth it.
