I would like opinions from people who have LCD monitors and used them for other then office work.

Picture quality?

Working lifetime?

Or are they a waste of money for a six inch deep foot print?

Personally, other than the fact that LCD flat panels consume less space, I cannot see any other benefits of LCD Vs. CRT. They cannot render the image quality that CRT can render. You'll notice that the colors look rather washed out and dark when you don't look at it in a certain angle. Actually, even when you do look at them in a pefect angle... The fonts don't look as smooth, they look rather blocky compared to a CRT monitor. Another disadvantage is that LCD monitor begin to get bad pixels sooner or later and are very fragile...

using a SAMSUNG TFT770(17') and a CRT 19' home.
Pro
1. absolute flat.
2. safer. protect your eyesight. I can tell this difference since I work very long time in front of my monitors. For this eason, every family member likes using the LCD.
3. As people said, LCD saves space. For PC home user. It's NOT a big deal since it's easy to add one more table at home to bring you more room.
4. energy-saving. In summer, you feel warmer due to CRT's heating. 19' CRT is about 300 watts! a mild electric-oven in front of you.

Con
1. NOT good for 3D/2D games, not good for any graphics design. If I move my mouse(logitech) too fast. the poiner looks delay because of response time issue. the delay is so obvious that your eye could tell. 19' CRT won't give me this problem. please notice, I did correctly mouse setup on my PCs. no mouse setup issue here. and I don't think any resolution issue here. LCD's resolution can be setup as same as the CRT's.
2. view angle not wide as CRT. you had better sit straight in front of your LCD screen. otherwise, you fell little bit "dim".
3. spendy.
4. you may need a screen to protect the LCD surface. CRT's surface is glass, enougn to protect itself and easy to clean(dirt due to esd). LCD has no esd issue but you still need to clean it ocassionally. The surface is vulnerable you have to think about adding a screen. right now I'm using the transparent, shipped to me with the LCD.

In a word, I love the LCD. nights, I spend a lots of time in front of my PCs and I am not a game player.

Thanks for the response.
LCD's were promised to equal CRT's screens and be more durable. I checked out the new models and havn't noticed much improvement in the last two years, other then in size.

But LCD's seem to be a trophy purchase right now.
I will stick to 17 inch monitors, since a 19 inch CRT will take double the space. And used 17's and even 19's are cheap, if they are not shipped.
Our manufacturers don't seem to be able to produce a durable or repairable LCD monitor, so I will wait and see what plasma screens turn out like.

LCD's are good for most things, but only at their native resolution, if you change resolution you will get 'blocky' characters.
If you always use the same res., remember games often change resolution, then LCD's can offer bright crisp, perfectly registered images.
