Hello folks,

The more I read, the more I find out what I'm doing and have done wrong with my systems. I've never really paid attention to partitioning, but as I'm researching how to set up a Linux/Apache web server, I'm finding all of the benefits of partitioning.

My main system, Athlon 1ghz w/ 25 Gig HD running Win ME, is currently unpartitioned. I've had it for about 5 months and use it for web design and maintenance, 35mm slide archiving and gaming. Could you suggest a partitioning strategy? Is it possible *and* worth it to retroactively partition? Are there cheap apps that will enable me to do this, or could I do it right in the BIOS? Will I potentially loose data if I partition?

I appreciate the help!

there are people here who will swear by a program called partition magic. I'm not even sure if it works for linux, but the point of my post is to strongly recommend against it unless you have the capability to entirely back up your machine and reinstall everything quickly. I just used it (following directions and all) about a week ago to repartition my hdd, and it smoked my whole system. fortunately I had just moved my important files to the other computer. regardless, I will never waste my time with that program again!

I'm not looking for a program to partition my future Linux server. Mandrake 8.0 will help me do that.

I'm looking for an app that will retroactively , safely and cheaply partition my main Win ME system. Sorry about the confusion...

Anyone else have any opinions about partition magic? Also, what is a partitioning structure that you would recommend given the use of my system mentioned in my first post.

Partition Magic 5.0 will do it. It supports Fat, NTFS, Linux...

I use Partition Magic 5.0 quite a bit to create new partitions, resize partitions, etc. Great program. Provides lots of disk info as well.
