Any one here play guitar or bass guitar? What's your setup? I've been playing electric for about 2 1/2 years now. I'm into offspring and pennywise type of up-beat punk.

Basses: POS Peavy Fury - stripped it of frets and filled them in for a fretless. Also added a whammy bar to it just for kicks. Was my first bass. Great for just getting the oddest sounds out of a bass with effects pedals especially. Carvin Bunny Brunnel 6 string fretless- ultrawide neck (full string spacing) - was a decent bass for some rock if careful, bad at anything that needed that edge and punch that fretted basses give, though did jazz and blues well - also had a nice deep tone and great sustain on the notes. Warwick 5 string Corvette, active electronics, fretted. Perfect for slapping when playing primus or playing punk to classic rock. Solid punch and superb definition to the notes. Excellent excellent bass - best out of them all I'd say - like Warwick's better than Alembic's personally (or at least the two I had the privledge of getting real playing time on). Fender 73' Jazzbass found at garage sale - had to buy new tuning knobs and needed it refretted - other than being beatup, sounded beautiful once back in working order. Was the best for old jazz and blues style playing as that was essentially the only bass for a very long time that was electric so it hit the sound perfectly. Sharp, yet with a smooth rolloff. Really old upright bass that was a ******* on the fingers. Have no idea of the make as it's been awhile to say the least. Had about a 1/2 inch clearance from the neck. Nicknamed the meatgrinder for that reason. :) As for amps, played through countless ones, speakers as well. Styles: Learned from a blues and jazz bassist, so I learned never to play the same thing twice in a song - had to be the best thing for me, as if I got lost, I could always improvise and never had problems just jamming freestyle - wherever the guitar went I could follow up nicely with that background that was forced into me. Played a good bit of punk, some rock, a bit of classic rock, blues, and jazz - and of course, Bach thanks to Pastorias for taking it to such a level and even getting a book out on it - sad to see the world's best bassist ever die to a bouncer though. :( I played for 5 or 6 years before slowly stopping. Stuff I played - any punk of the mid to late 90's all the way back to the Ramones, Operation Ivy, and Sex Pistols. Rage Against the Machine, 311, Led Zep, Nirvana, Jacho Pastorias, countless other bassist and groups as well. But those are the ones that I recall the easiest off the top my head. fishybawb 09-13-2003, 06:58 AM I play both. I sold my Tele, but I've still got my brother's Peavey and my Fender Jazz Special bass to mess about with :) I've recently started playing around with some home recording using multitrack software, but to be honest it's sounding fairly godawful at the moment - I need a better mic I think. I play everything really, mainly blues-rock style stuff. herosrest 09-13-2003, 07:46 AM From a quiet and sheltered corner of home - memory's of a very loud and unsheltered past. Ah the good ole days. Play both bass and guitar, have for 15 years. Electric is a Martin believe it or not. And I have a Ibanez bass. Had a B.C Rich Warlock (bought new) for a couple years. Saving for somthing better but its gonna set me back about $1100 for the one I got my eye on. NJEnviroguy 09-13-2003, 09:02 AM Fender strat running through a marshall. Decent sound. I'm falling in love with Mesa Boogie though. If only I had another kidney to sell for it. :( herosrest 09-13-2003, 09:43 AM ROCK THE AGES Billforce 09-13-2003, 02:40 PM I play the guitar daily (on my stereo):D SRV rules even after he's gone. genesound 09-13-2003, 03:56 PM I'm reworking my Gibson Ripper L-9S bass lately, had it 30 years, need a pickup :( j.m@talk 09-13-2003, 06:21 PM I'm about as musical as a goldfish :( I can play a mean CD tho :D mireland 09-13-2003, 06:26 PM Originally posted by j.m@talk21.com I'm about as musical as a goldfish :( I can play a mean CD tho :D I always wanted to play the keyboard myself..alas I have as much musical talent as N'Synchttp://www.fancysplace.com/smileys/laugh.gif j.m@talk 09-13-2003, 06:31 PM I bought a Bert Weiden "learn to play with your self in 24 Hrs" book once, But I couldn't get the guitar under the blankets ;) mireland 09-13-2003, 06:32 PM Originally posted by j.m@talk21.com I bought a Bert Weiden "learn to play with your self in 24 Hrs" book once, But I couldn't get the guitar under the blankets ;) http://www.fancysplace.com/smileys/stop.gif lol!! genesound 09-13-2003, 06:34 PM lol :D you got a book for that??? j.m@talk 09-13-2003, 06:37 PM I stole that joke from Mike Harding :p I guess I should do the decent thing..... http://www.mikeharding.co.uk/ http://www.mikeharding.co.uk/nav/anipics.gif 1975. I have everyone of his albums I can find-buy them on sight-hes a guitar god to me. A ex-living legend. He also was one of Eric Claptons best buddies. Studied some under BB king aswell. A great loss to the music world when he died. The last so great to fall IMHO was Jimi Hendrix and Cliff Burton (my bass guitar god). ~If anypone knows Metalica I can play the bass solo Anesthisia "pulling teeth" since I was 15. I started bass first at 10 and took lessons for 4 years-then went on my own.~ THose two guys (Stevie and Jimi) put in one room would have brought the house down. Do you have the live at carnegy hall album. It rocks-if you dont get it. His little bro plays duel lead with him. Its great. Gods got a rock band up there that could keep me happy for eternity! Course it might have too-hehe. :t rangeral 09-13-2003, 11:59 PM Don't play much anymore, still have my black gibson lite-body sg with fender twin-reverb, into leads like iommi, clapton, blackmore, tipton and downing. Use to see hendrix walking around the village, doors in LA. Billforce 09-14-2003, 04:16 PM Originally posted by $1500-P4 gamer "SRV rules even after he's gone." I think I have most all of SRV albums, yeh with bro. Jimmie concert. My favorite "Little Wing", what a master of tones. My grandson is named Eric after Eric Clapton, got all of the origal "Cream" on tapes...get the idea that my family is into guitar stuff. I also enjoy some of the good jazz guys, watched Laurendo Almeida play with Kenton, Shorty Rogers, Stan Getz, Brubeck at the "Lighthouse" in Hermosa Beach, Calif.....blend of classical and jazz. Hey, I even get off with guys like Satriani or Stevie Vie. I PUMP this thru 2 Harmon Kardon 400w Amps, Macintosh pre(tube) and Bose towers, ROCKS. genesound 09-14-2003, 04:40 PM Maybe you have the Stevie Wonder/Stevie Ray Vaughn/Salt n Peppa MTV video of Superstitious. I worked on that one as studio maintenance engineer for Glendale Studios. I built a transmission line system for Stevie Ray's guitar cable (absolutely no wireless for him) so we could put Rave-ons Dumble amps in another isolated studio 200 feet away, they were so freaken loud  and he monitored then in the studio we were shooting in. We managed to get his tone, took a couple of attempts ;) rangeral 09-15-2003, 06:56 PM I like some jazz in there also cobham, carter, sample or the crusaders, les mcann, weather report etc. Lived in glendale for a little while had to leave pretty quick one day over 30yrs ago, lol. Billforce 09-15-2003, 11:50 PM Spent a fair amount of time in Glendale myself. I built the methane to electric plant for the City of Glendale that utilized the gas from the Scholl Canyon landfill for fuel and produced electricity for 15,000 homes in Glendale. The landfill has an 18 hole golf course built on top of the landfill. It used 6 Waukesha natural gas engine/generators. genesound 09-16-2003, 12:01 AM Woa cool, HUGE power huh? I have a friend that works for So Cal Edison and manages grid swithching or something like that. It's fascinating. Glendale Studios has it's own little substation on the lot fed off the high voltage lines, brings it down to like 440 3ph, theres another half dozen xformers after that. :t SysOpt.com
