Actually, my comments are normally taken out of context. (my mistake).
It was meant to show that the world in general may call Americans "yankee", whether or not the target people do. :)
I do find that, to my dismay, other peoples confuse Canadians and Americans. And they get upset that Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese are not the same, as well as English/Scottish/Irish, German/Austrian, Russian/Lithuanian, etc (to almost infinity).
Sure, I'll toast!

Well then Rick, i think perhaps you're an humble and honorable gentleman ;)
Yeah, there's lotsa confusion  amongst the tribes, and sects, and history, but we need a concerted effort to make it better, in education and intent :D :t
Cheers! :t

Are you sure you were in Canada? I don't know anyone that pronounces about "aboat". Sounds like they were having fun with you in more ways than one.
We do have close associations with our U.S. allies as many of our employers are U.S. run companies and our economy is closely tied to the U.S. Many of my friends and relatives work in the U.S. and some have become Americans literally. We're not all "up north" either; I live in an area that has warmer weather than many regions of the U.S. We are a huge country with a population not much larger than that of New York city and it's surrounding area.

Having just returned from Canada, the only thing I can say, is ( not knowing alot about the french canadians ) is that they are friendly, helpful and polite. Kinda remind me of "Leave it to Beaver" type of life, but hey, can't be all bad!!!
I sometimes wish people here in the U. S. would take a lesson from them.
As for being a Yankee, I am one, and proudly so. But I hold nothing against the Rebs:D

It's more of an inflection, really. Not really a long "o", but closer to that than "ou" as in ouch. My friend Stan acknowledges it, but his native tongue is english, btw. ;)

It is difficult to tell which part of Canada a person comes from by their accent with the obvious exception of French Quebec and Newfoundland which may be closer to Irish than the Canadian norm. I spoke to a guy today who spent his whole life in Nova Scotia up until last week and his speech was no different than that here on the prairie.
On the other hand, in the US, the differences from North to South and East to West are remarkable. The further South you go, the drawl is more pronounced and the further East you go the more the ou sound is pronounced.
The Canadian sound is a lot like West coast US, especially California, even more so than Oregon or even Washington State although the difference is subtle. The drawl rule doesn't seem to apply on the west coast.
