i have a athlon XP barton 2500+ running at normal speed, i.e. i didn't do anything to change it. sansoft sierra says its running at the normal speed of 1.8GHz, so its not overclocked. yet it still runs at about 48oC at idle, and around 55oC after about an hour of half-life. i know this is way too hot. i have a fan/heatsink combo that is rated up to a 2800+, its aluminum, i know thats not the best, but 55o is still way too hot. i also put a thin layer of thermal paste on the heatsink/proc. is there something that i am overlooking (mobo setting, etc.)? i shouldn't have to get a watercooler to run my cpu at safe levels at normal speeds. if it helps i have a soyo dragon black kt400 ultra mobo. i am not new to computers, i have just never had this problem before. my ambient case temp is 36oC, so i don't think its an ambient heat prob. ANY suggestion are welcomed.

I dont see why you would have any problems at all. What HSF do you have? What kind of flow do you have in your case, bad flow means bad temps. Also, check to see if your HS is really dusty, that can cause a lot of the temp problems too.

55C way too hot? Hmm half the comps at my work run around that temp. I would call it warm for that chip not hot.
Would I run it at that temp on my home comp? yep for a bit. I would not worry short term. Like said above clean the case/HSF and make sure you have good air flow in the case. Maybe spend a couple bucks on a decent HSF if you are not going to over clock.
If you see dust in the heat sink go buy some canned air to blow it out, that helps alot.

Get one of these (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=N82E16835150010) if you want way better noise and temp than stock hsf and it's cheap. Your case is a bit warm, my mobo temp is 25C, but then I run air conditioning.

Wow $7 for a HSF, can not really go wrong with that.

Did you install it your self?
Possibly, you chipped the core.
I have the same problem with my TBird, I think i may have chipped it and am too scared to look.

i bought some more fans for my case, and that $7 heatsink looks 100% better than the one i have now (a little Aluminum with a 60mm fan). hopefully that will cool it down. i know i didn't chip the core, it was fine when i reapplied the thermal compound.
