I have a Gateway G6-200 with a Pentium 200 MHz processor, 64MB Ram.
Has any one with this same computer added a CDRW? What model (brand) did use, did it come with software to create CD's.
I was looking at a HP model 9510i 12x8x32 but it says in the specs a 300 MHz cpu is the minimum requirement. Is this true?
I'd suggest a Plextor CDRW with "burn Proof Technology" over any other CDRW drive regardless of interface, IDE or SCSI.

If the IDE drive causes a severe slowdown and the system is unusable or don't burn correctly, make sure;
1. To turn off the Anti-Virus
2. All power savers, screen savers, monitor timer etc
3. Look in the system tray(by the clock) and disable all the junk there
4. Press Ctl+Alt+Del one time and close everything except Explorer and Systray
5. Don't do ANYTHING while the burn is underway, don't even touch the mouse.
If the IDE drive still balks while running in the 200mhz system, you may consider a SCSI burner.
More money of course, but the SCSI interface card should have a small CPU on it to take the load off the system processor.
There is a Plextor in steals and deals today under "Don't miss the Buy.com deal of the Day" for about $139.00 with burnproof software/hardware

For sure go with a burner that has the "Burn-Proof" technology. Ricoh makes a nice burner, but they use a different technology similar to "burn-proof". From the people that I have talked to it works great.

I've just purchased a TDK VeloCD at 12x10x32. It only cost $150. The VeloCD line goes to 24x20x42, but that one costs 300. I haven't used it yet, but TDK was the first retail cd-rw to have burn-proof. Plextors are supposed to be good, but i you'll be hard press to find one for the value of the VeloCDs.

If your want to burn anything with that unit you will need burn proof technology.A large buffer(4-8mg)won't help much if at all, less you burn at a slower speed than the unit is capable of.More ram is a must if the chipset will allow it.

Hello,
Until a few months ago I had a Cyrus processor 200 and an Aopen motherboard with 96 MB RAM and Mat****a CD-RW CW-7856 (OEM), WIN98 and all together it worked without “big problems”. Burning speed was all the time 2 and I was also able to burn direct from the CD (Sony 8 speed). To do something like that I had to close every other application except Adaptec software. With higher speed (4 or 8) system it tends to freeze it.

Another solution to multi-task while burning a CD without buffer underruns would be to get a SCSI interface CDRW drive since SCSI interface drives don't rely on the CPU to perform the task. The work is done by the SCSI controller. Of course a a SCSI adapter is required which will cost you about $50 for a SCSI adapter that will be adequate for CDRW, scanner, etc SCSI drives. However, an Ultra 160 compatible SCSI controller will be required if you want to use an Ultra 160 SCSI hard disk. Other than that, plan on spending around $50 for a SCSI controller for other SCSI devices.

I use Acer 12x8x32 (4 mB buffer) with Adaptec SW on homebrand PC with P-Pro200(256 cache) and 192mB RAM. Works good. I use DirectCD to copy straight from x36CD-ROM drive. No problem.
Once I had a chance to try HP 8x4x32 with some HP (or Veritas) software to copy music CD and make one data CD. Had no problem. The system was homebrand P200mmx with 128 mB RAM. It had SCSI x4CD-ROM, well it took about 2 hours to make copy of the music CD.

I think the answer to your question is that it is true..a faster processor is needed adding memory will help a bit..but if you buy that particular burner..don't even think about doing anything else other than burning..slower burners are out there for a great deal and the time difference isn't so bad..I have a 4X burner on a p200..and it works flawlessly

NDC is 100% correct.

Well I decided to go with NDC's recommendation. I went with the Plextor 12x10x32 PX-W1210TA/SW with the Burn-Proof technology.
Don't know who gave me the heads up about Buy.com but got a good deal there: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10252769&loc=2065
I have a demo of Nero 4.0 thought I give it a try.
