I installed Media player 9 some months ago on Win98SE machine, PIII-750Mhz and 384 Megs RAM. I have an ATI Rage Pro with 32 Megs RAM. DVD player is a Toshiba 12X.
Media Player as currently configured does not recognize DVD's. Should it? Is there a way to make it work, or is there a download from ATI that will work better and work with this card?
Thanks

WMP uses the engine from a 3rd-party DVD player package to show movies. It does not have a DVD player engine of it's own.
You will need PowerDVD, Sonic Cineplayer or WinDVD in order to get DVD function. PowerDVD is my recommendation. Once you do have it, you won't need WMP at all anyway. The whole thing is sort of silly.

You may have soem trouble finding a download from ATI. They seem to be supporting WinME ond newer only. They did write a DVD player software. You can try version 5 from here:

I never ran a DVD on that particular card.
Windows MEdia Player 9 will play DVD's. You simply need to get some sort of Plug In.

Basically the windows media player can do it but you have to pay for a plug in. I think they run around 10 dollars.
Buying a full fledged one would be the best bet. Your DVD player did not come with software?

It's sorta silly to pay $15-20 for a plugin when the full player costs $10-15.

Get a hold of Power DVD and update it and you should be set to go

Great feedback, guys, thanks...
The DVD player I am using here was supplied with another computer that had ATI's dvd software as part of the package, albeit a different (and older) card...Xpert98 with 8 Meg, I think.
I do have a copy of PowerDVD 4.0, but when I installed it on this computer, the video and audio is jerky when I play a DVD, so I was looking for an alternate solution. The computer specs should be plenty good enough.

Make sure you have DMA enabled for your DVDROM drive and that you have patched Power DVD up

thanks jakk...
the dvd drive is enabled as udma33 in the bios (at least that is what it says when the drive info flashes up at POST and before windows loads. Is there another place I need to check?
I downloaded a patch to PowerDVD last night ( about 8 megs, dated jan or feb of 2003, I think), but I haven't installed it yet. I'll do that tonight.

Thanks BPB...
neither of my CD drives was checked for DMA there. I changed to DMA and problem solved! no more skip.
BTW...sorry about your Dad. I lost my dad just over two years ago and at times its still really tough duty...my prayers are with you and family.
