It can happen - just the likelyhood is that of getting winning the lottery so to speak. While most fighters used generally the same rounds as machine guns that the ground troops used (often the very same weapon), you'd have to really tear it up and the machine gun fired a heavier round at a higher velocity generally. That's why you'd see many fighters with up to 8 machine guns mounted in the wings. They needed to tear up what was inside that 1 to 2 mil (mostly) of sheet metal a good bit before the plane would fall apart. Granted one pass of the machine guns was all that was needed on a solid pass, but sometimes it took more. A .45 calliber round could penetrate the hull, but you couldn't fire the weapon fast enough to tear up the plane enough unless you got one of those one in a million shots off at it.
