hi, i'm curious about all this spyware business i'm hearng about. does microsoft get info from your computer everytime that ie explorer checks to see what components are installed....etc? i dont want them to know what i have in my system. i have a firewall in place but i allow ie to access the internet freely. does that defeat the purpose of having a firewall?

Go to the Windows Update site and this is what you get when you click on product Updates:

Without sending.....
There is a file on your system, (can't remember what it's called) and it has the already installed features and this is what Product Updates uses to detirmine what to show you for available updates. If you hit the Show Installed Updates button, you will get a list that covers all updates as well as showing you what has been installed on your machine to this date.
There isn't any spyware installed by I.E. that I am aware of.

Using Zone Alarm does take care of some of the traffic created by spyware.

Hi,
a lot of "free" software contains spyware to display the ads. If you have some kind of MP3 software on your machine, check out http://spyprotect.koolhost.com to find out if it has spyware built in.
