I have heard that the max memory that should be used with WIN98Se is 384mb. Even though the mobo will support 512mb, that WIN98SE will actually run slower with more than 384MB.
Does Anytone know about this ?

thanks

The Maximum memory is usually 512mb. Usually.....

Actually, after 256mb RAM, Windows doesn't speed up that much...

512MB is pretty much the maximum, but it's nonsense 384MB runs faster ...
You'll have to make certain changes to your VCACHE setting in order not to waste all additional memory on disk cache.
Try Cacheman @ www.outertech.com (http://www.outertech.com)

Your chipset may limit the amount of RAM that can be cached -- 64M for 430TX for example.

Anything over 128 gives little performance gain in system wide performance. Anything over that helps with multitasking speed. Your single process will ot run faster with 512 compared to 128. Does this mean you should not upgrade? NO. RAM is so cheap, you had better buy it while the price is low. There is a glitch in 98/ME with systems over 512MB. This is the work around: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q253/9/12.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=512%20RAM%20memory&rnk=2&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98

Good luck
