I'm looking to buy a TV tuner card so I can watch tv and VHS tapes on my computer. I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations?

The price needs to be below $100 (US), and I don't need a Video card, I'm happy with my Geforce2, so I don't really need a combo card. Other than that I don't really have any other requirements. I would be nice to be able to video capture and the higher the resolution the better.

Thanks,
LK

I've read that the USB TV tuners can be choppy because they don't have enough bandwidth for the amount of data that needs to come through.

I was in the market and went with the Hauppauge WinTV Radio PCI card (Model 401).

I got mine off of ebay. I was looking to spend $50 or less. I got this card for $52 including shipping.

The two that I was deciding between were the Hauppauge (http://www.hauppauge.com) and the Pinnacle Systems (http://www.pinnaclesys.com) , because they both have Win2k support.

I am happy with my purchase. It works as advertised.

i read there was a cable descambler, but last time I checked (a year or two ago) it was only black and white and no audio.

Last year I asked the same question. I was directed by several members to the PCI Pinnacle Studio PCTV Pro. It has worked great for me. I've recorded many commercials and music videos. Default recording format is AVI (HUGE file)......I don't think you can change that. What that means is that you have to use their editor to make it into MPEG(MUCH smaller file). You'd probably end up doing that anyway to edit out the extra scenes.

I paid about $70 I think at Buy.com.

Well, I did some thinking and I need more advice. My second computer doesn't have that great of a video card and I was thinking that I might get a new video card for that system. It wouldn't be my main gaming system so I don't need that great of 3D graphics, but I still want one that would get the job done, plus good TV quality

So, what would your recommendations be for those type of cards, same price range? around $100 (US)

Thanks,
LK

Tip:

Make sure that the TV tuner card has Directx 8 drivers. My Voodoo TV 200 worked great until I installed my Elsa Gladiac Ultra video card and associated Directx8. Now the TV 200 is broke (I haven't had much time to fix it yet).

The ATI All-in-Wonder will do the job...it's just that there are several different variants of it (new and old) to choose from to fit your price range. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

This one might work (4th one down on 2nd link): http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc/465123.html

Well, I finally decided. I'm going with the ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Pro. It would be nice to get the Radeon AIW, but this should give me everything I'm wanting.

Thanks for all the help guys.

There is another way..
I have the ATI Rage Fury blah blah, it has vid in and out. All you do is have a video recorder handy, plug vid out on vid mach to vid in on ATI card, then audio out from vid mach to audio in on sound card and there you have it. No wasting computer usage.

I have it running that way and it works fine.
