All this talk about spyware has become very interesting lately. I recently downloaded and installed a msconfig version that works on Win2k and found a couple things I didnt like running at startup. One called newdot.dll in particular. I disabled it from starting but went further, I renamed this dll just cuz i didnt like it.
No internet connection once I did that!
Ok, renamed it back to dll....still no connection! Rebooted, etc...etc just to be sure...no go. Now this is getting nasty. I was faced with a possible reinstall.

I found and ran a spyware detector & fixer which detected as many as 100 adware/spyware cookies, dll's, exe's residing on my computer. I ran the cleaner in this program, it eliminated the spyware and also told me it repaired the damaged winsock, I was connected again.

I have since run this program on all my computers and cleaned em all up. If anyone wants to read more about this subject try here: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

For the Adware destroying program go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Msconfig for Win2k: http://www.withoutlimitations.com/stuff/msconfig.exe

BTW, ZA had been alerting me about a dll wanting to act as an application for weeks and of course i didnt allow it...good ol ZA.

The biggest offenders on my system seemed to be comet cursor and imesh.
