"Lombardi: You're constantly connected, and we can constantly touch your bits. Steam allows us to do an arbitrary number of updates per day/per hour/per minute, so if your code base is constantly changing then it's hard to write a hack for that code base."

So, what does that mean for the modders out there? Essentially any mods for skins, maps, etc are hacks of the source code. So how are we to write this stuff up if the "code base" is being arbitrarily changed beneath our feet.

Well if you read about the SDK, i think this is being geared at the modding community unliek any other game ever released and i dont think there will be major on the fly changes to the source code resultign in mods ceasing to work, but there may be small side effects, anyone remember the problems with AHL after one of the HL patches which disbaled the diving features? That sort of thing, but that was already an issue really anyhows

You see, this is where we begin bridging the gap between a patch the user can choose to install, and a mandatory update/upgrade that the user MUST install. Better yet, it's installed FOR US, without our knowledge or consent. This is why Berkeley University's BOINC project will lose so much business support... because the BOINC client can push out code updates without the end users having any say over the matter. What a great thing to do to a live server. Lots of businesses (AMD, IBM, INTEL, etc) run the current SETI client because THEY control whether or not to install the latest and greatest SETI client. Remove that, and you lose your biggest supporters.

I can think of a better way to explain it than "we can touch your bits and alter the code beneath your feet". Geez... I wonder how long it will take someone to write a hack tool that exploits an open Steam connection? Now I feel all warm and fuzzy, and also unwilling to install Steam until they address this gaping security hole.

Routers and firewalls will be unable to block incoming attacks because they'll piggyback on an already existing Steam connection... initiated by the user. Joy. So we're dropping our pants so Valve can have some peace of mind.

I'll play CS 1.5 till I can't play anymore, not out of obediance to Valve, but simply because I love the game, no matter who made it.

I'm going to trot off and email a complaint right now with that article in hand.

Thanks!

Logan

It most likely changes bits and pieces of the code modders don't fool with to begin with as they haven't torn apart the whole engine. A good deal, yes, but the whole deal, no.
