I want to put in a secondary HD with the idea that I'll use it as my primary when I upgrade my CPU and Mainboard next spring.
Any recommendations as to a good drive that would grow into a new system would be?

I'd like to stay away from SCSI because my box is full already.

Go with the 2MB Cache 7200RPM HDDs, IBM, Western Digital, have used both, they work good, come in sizes for everyone's budget and the 2MB cache really helps /forum/smile.gif Most are ATA66(UDMA66) but they run well on UDMA33 controllers also /forum/smile.gif

Hi...

Any IBM 22Gxp (aka Titan II) will do. They all have 2Mb cache and spin @ 7200rpm.
They come in different sizes: 9.1Gb, 13.5Gb, 18Gb and 22Gb.
I have two 9.1Gb and they are FAST !

TomB: Listen to Stan! /forum/smile.gif. He is right, the new IBM disks are affordable, very fast and reliable. I have a Deskstar 22GXP 9,1GB (DJNA-370910 2MB cache, 7200RPM, DMA66), and as Stan says it is a really good disk.

iBM! At the end there only be one: IBM! The new Western Digitals are really manufactured using IBM technology. If you can get a good price, there is nothing better in the market. IBM's scsi hard drives are excellent too.

I am so happy to see that everyone agree that IBM is, without a doubt, the best HD manufacturer...

I got W.D. 18.0 ATA/66 7200Rpm with 2mb cache. I paid $220 from buy.com

I think buy.com sells them for around $225 but if you mention this url http://www.pc-beyond.com/hdrive.htm
on the pricematch form they'll pricematch it at $220. I ordered mine Friday during their free shipping offer for ground shipping and it was shipped yesterday and I got it today. They also sell the Promise controller cards for about $40.

IBM isn't the fastest in all the tests but they are always close to the top. I agree that IBM drives are the best bet and from what I have seen the prices on IBM drives are good. WD would be my second choice.

fast isn't always best
the drives we fit that have the least come backs under warr.are
Seagate ( we haven't had one returned yet,)
Western digital ( 1 in last 10month s has been faulty during warr.) also if your on a budget and buy second hand check seriel numbers on their respective web site's you'll probably find drive will have warrs till 2001 if they are over 4 gig ( you could possibly buy duff one and send back for replacement under warr ( a dealer in Auckland goes round all the computer markets buying these makes and sending them back and getting replacements just costs him shipping cost for a new drive at about 20% of new price!
IBM are good but we have found them fussy with some mother boards, so if you go for one before you buy a new mobo check it out for any prob's with IBM drives first.

About IBM drives: if you buy an ATA66 drive and you haven't got a motherboard to handle it yet, make sure to download IBM's tool to disable the ATA66. This won't "happen on its own" you have to run a special program from a floppy.

welsh wizard: Sorry I should have posted the link directly. You can find some tools for IBM hard drives here: http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/welcome.htm .

Scroll down to where it says "IBMATA66 (version 1.21)". That is the tool you need.

Check out Storage Review for the new HD speed demon, the new ATA/66 Seagate Barracuda.

Some early reports that I have read say that it is ALMOST as fast as the Seagate Cheetah, 10K rpm SCSI HD, w/the new Quantum KX Plus a close second. By the way, both drives have only 512K cache on them.

Food for thought. I've received two defective 9.1 GB 7200 RPM Western Digital HDs in past 3 months. Third replacement is on its way, as no $$$ refunds. Go elsewhere, i.e., IBM, Seagate.
Read postings at WDC.Com for plenty of horror stories.
