It is a good one. http://www.ace.net.nz/tech/TechFileFormat.html But it doesn't show the file your are wanting to open. I wonder what program made it. skywalker[TSG] 07-14-2001, 08:30 PM sounds dangerous http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Philip1952 07-15-2001, 06:01 AM Yea my thoughts also. With it not listed on the link I gave him. If it were me I think I would delete it. Fingers 07-15-2001, 06:44 AM hehehe, it does sound like the perfect name for a "virus", but maybe it's an archive file of some sort too? If you really want to see what's in there, scan it for virus's, then try using "quickview" to see the contents. flash4master 07-15-2001, 08:28 AM yah, sounds like the perfect name for a virus... the H.I.V. virus perhaps lynchmob 07-15-2001, 02:45 PM In what context is this file?W2k and nt have hive files. Is that what you mean? lynch eq.rights 07-15-2001, 08:13 PM If this is in Windows 2000 (any version), I would not delete this file unless you know for sure what it is. Here is a reference to it in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: "Using NTBackup, restore the system hive file of the "crashed" server to a temporary location on your hard disk drive (for example: C:\Temp\system.hiv)" It is from this link: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q141/5/89.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=.hiv&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WIN2000 nodnerb2 07-16-2001, 06:29 AM I found a reference to an .hiv file on the following site following a link in this forum. I hope it answers your question http://www.myzar.com/boot.html SOFTWARE: Extract the Whistler ISO with ISOBUSTER or winimage to a new directory. Place setupreg.hiv if used into the /i386 directory Regards Nodnerb2 benchristian 04-22-2005, 11:35 AM Disclaimer: Neither I nor this forum's administrators will hold any responsibility for your use of the below information. I do not suggest using regedt32 unless you have detailed knowledge of how the registry works. It is very possible to render your system inoperable by corrupting the registry. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's opened with regedt32 and you can only open it if it's in a writeable location (as in your harddrive, not a cd) open regedt32 and click on hkey_local_machine (you probably have to scroll up to get there) click file > load hive choose a name (whatever you want doesn't really matter) find that name as a sub-folder under hkey_local_machine now you see the values of the keys in that .hiv file when you're finished viewing or changing values select file > unload hive SysOpt.com
