WD Raptor HD In Raid

Just got my second Raptor drive today and installed it in a Raid 0 configuration. Using them as my boot and drives for games that load big files.
Unofficial test:
Before, UnrealII loading a saved game off single raptor approx 18 to 25 seconds.
Now approx 10 seconds.
I did not time loading from boot, but it seems to be 40 to 50 % faster, as it should. As they say, SMOKIN!!:x

Just wait to the OS breaks the RAID0 strip set and you have to reinstall everything from scratch.

RAID 0, 1, or 0+1 ain't what it is cracked up to be.

I prefer hardware RAID 5 with 3 drives and parity backup.

This mobo does not support Raid 5. Gonna pick up one of the controllers that does. Right now my 3rd drive is a maxtor 120. Can you see any problems by using a maxtor sata 80 gig drive for the third in a Raid 5 config?

The drive must still have similar performance. Besides, the array would only use 36GB of it and that rest would be wasted.

How often will a stripe set 0 or 1 break?

if a RAID0 stripe breaks, you're screwed. If RAID1 mirroring fails, then you probably just need to re-establish the mirror. That's the whole point of RAID1; if one drive dies, you still have a backup.

how often? that's hard to say. everyone has a different setup. no matter what you do, backup backup backup.

For me I really don't worry about if I have a failure on my raid as I do back up weekly to an external USB drive. I have two Maxtor 200 gig 133 drives on my server, not set up in a raid for all else. I just like the speed of loading from the raid 0 configuration. Think I should cut back on the caffine.

Not to mention that a raid 5 array is sloooowooooow!

If that is the case, I'll stick with what I have. As I regularly back up, I like the speed of the RAID 0. If it crashes, I'll reload, done that enough times to have it down to doing it in my sleep.

Sup people. I read that you all scared of RAID0 with Raptors or any other drives. Hmm how about using Drive Image 7 wich can backup your RAID0 and restore it any time? and no data loss :)

Drive Image 7?? Wondering how long it takes to copy image and how much data you have.

I have my raid backed up by a WD JB drive, and it only takes like 10 min or so to clone it back using Norton Ghost. I have approx 15 gig of data being cloned.

BTW, I have never had the Raid break, but have only had that set up for about 3-4 months. I have cloned it "back though, as putting on trial programs, and not liking them, I think it is better to just clone back, as it seems programs "leave" data here and there.--RH--

Glad to hear that...It's beginning to look alot like Christmas...Ok, not yet...but soon.

Gonna RAID 0 with another Raptor...soon.

I have a 60GB Maxtor that I image my single raptor to now, weekly. Plus...my data, such as email, favorites, files, MP3s...all get written to my 2nd drive, anyways.....

I've read and read the horror stories of instability of 0, but...gonna give the speed thing a shot...what the heck.

Only takes mine about 25 minutes to image, and about 20 or so to restore from it...
