I got a email the other day, it was a link to a porn site, I didn't go there and was going to just delete it. Prior to deleting it, I went to block the sender and it came up with my own email address. Does this mean somebody got into my system? I use black ice all the time. I scanned for trojans and such, my machine seems fine, should I be concerned.
Appreciate any help members can give http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You should be ok. I wouldn't worry about it.

You could install ZoneAlarm and have it block access to the net. If anything tries to connect it will catch it.

Nothing to worry about..
Maybe a "Ghost mailer" was used?

I've seen some reviews and comparisons of personal firewalls and they all seem to find ZoneAlarm is the one to have. Even Steve Gibson recommends it over all the others.

see http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm and scroll to the bottom for links.

I've had ZoneAlarm for a long while now, and it does everything I need it to do. I can be online for only about 10 minutes before I start seeing port scans hitting my IP block!

Back to your e-mail, if you view full headers, you might be able to see the domain it came from if it spoofed the address.

Good luck!

::ZONE ALARM IS ****::

I got hacked when i installed ZA and i needed to get a new HDD as errors were writen onto my HDD...i know i was hacked as i had my printer give me a note saying "u got hacked by a borg"

maybe it is just me...
In my opinion if someone wants to get in...THEY WILL!!!

::Personaly u cant go wrong with NPF (Norton Personnal Firewall):: u might be able to get it *deleted* or from www.download.com (http://www.download.com)

Regarding te e-mail i think that the chances are someone usesd an annonymous mailer client that u can type who it is from which includes ur e-mail address if they wanted to

helped??
What does anyone else think??

I have seen ZA reccomended over any other firewall program, including Norton. The old versions of ZA had a pretty well known backdoor which has been fixed.

I use and recommend Zone Alarm. Just have to configure it right!

I too like Zone Alarm. It's easy to use and the price is as good as it gets(free, of course.) I have it on 3 computers for over 1 1/2 years with a cable modem and have not had any problems. Sorry to hear that it may not have worked for someone but I think the overwhelming belief is that it is outstanding.

ZA PRO is where you want to be there Biff.

you didn't get hacked, someone forged an email from you and sent it to you. it's very simple to do, all that's needed is a mail server that you can telnet to that doesn't have anti-relay properly configured. you should contact your isp and have them put some anti-spoof measures in place on their mailservers. it's not hard to do, but they may not want to because it involves having the mail servers validate that the domain every mail is presenting as it's origin actually matches up with the originating ip address and that will add some performance overhead.

Zone Alarm for sure. I used the free version for months and a few weeks ago purchased the Pro version. I love it. I have even more security control. I'm trying to convince my manager Zone Alarm is the way to go for the office systems with dialup capability...

I'm only the security analyst there, what do I know? -note the sarcasm http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks again for the replies http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

hehehe, here would be a hard sell for anything other than ZA, infact I've used it for a year or so myself. I like black ice, it checked out ok at grc, so I'll go with the members that believe I'm ok, and that I havn't been hacked.

As always, many thanks - Biff

Not only does Steve Gibson recommend ZoneAlarm, he recommends not using Black Ice Defender. It was in the recent DoS attacks against GRC.com article (Black Ice failed to detect the trojans\zombies used in the attack).
