I thinking of modding my case with a plexiglass cutout. I do not want to use bolts nor will the window frame rubber technique work for me. I want to use a glue to glue the plexiglass to the case. Anyone done this. Anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks!

haven't tried it but silicone glass sealant might work

I have used a glue made especially to reglue the rubber parts of tennis shoes back to the fabric. Its called shoo Goo, and can be bought at many hardware stores, or K-Mart/Walmart. I have used this glue for so many projects that I have lost count, from sealing coaxal antenna cable for outside use, to insulating wire ends, to a temp repair to a fish tank. It has never failed to stick good to anything I have tried it on. It is a silicone base glue, and reasonably clear...kinda 'foggy' looking clear.

On any glueing job, a small roughing up of the contact area helps assure a good bond.

As Radbasa says, silicone will stick just about anything to anything, I used it to stick some wooden handles to glass, just a thin skim, worked perfectly, be careful though, it is difficult to get any excess off. Two part epoxy will do the job too, in either case, depending on the situation, make sure both surfaces are clean and 'roughed up a little'.

Silicone will work. That's just what I used for my case mod project. Its been a while but if I remember correctly it was an external silicone that I used. You can see a few pics at the link below. Trust me when I say that once it is dry it holds very well...

I can vouch for Shoo-Goo, because my computer is full of it right now, no problems. Strong hold, clear looking. It does get slighty yellow after about a year though.

Another vote for Shoo Goo (or Goop, whatever you'd like to call it). I've been using this tube of Automotive Goop for everything and it works great, well except for the knuckle carrier on my NMT but that's way off topic. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

For reference here is a summary of the substances recommended for gluing Plexiglas (tm) in no particular order.

Methylene Chloride
MEK
Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO)
Cynoacrylate adhesives
Epoxy
Glacial acetic acid/Acetone 50:50
Weld-On #3,4 or 5 (from glass shops)
Plex adhesive (from glass shops)
Chloroform with 10% dissolved Plexiglas(tm)

If your going to do something, do it right. Does shoegoo sound like plexiglass adhesive? Go to a glass shop and get the right stuff. Or at the very least, use silicone, although that doesnt adhere to flat surfaces the best. Shoegoo....sheesh!

There's lots of stuff you could use. I think that silicone is a good choice because it is flexible and semi-permanent (you can cut it out and take it apart with a little work - if you make a mistake, or just want to change something around. The one problem with silicone is that its a killer if you even get it close to something you're planning to paint.

If you plan to do something like a custom paint job on the case, be sure to apply the silicone after the painting is done, if you need an adhesive that you can paint over, I would recommend Epoxy - just don't plan on getting things back apart once they are bonded with epoxy.

One of the big things SysOpt Forums has going for it that many other forums do not is, People can add their comments (right or wrong) without someone coming along to say something detrimental about other comments.

There have been several times when I have posted something that was probably in error. This could be due to my having misunderstood the original post, or was simply mistaken in my belief with what I have responded with was correct.

Several times, others have corrected me in a friendly manner, and the correction was taken good naturedly. We are all here to learn.

In the case of the Shoo Goo as being a good adhesive, it is. Certainly there are other products that are as good, or even superior. I have used Shoo Goo for many projects and it has always done a great job. It is accessable sometimes where others may not be. It is simular or perhaps even the same as regular silicone adhesive found elsewhere.

While glueing plexiglass to plexiglass does take some specialized glues to melt the two pieces together, this will not work when attaching plexiglass to metal for instance.

Bottom line, when making your own comments and advice known, don't say detrimental things about what others have had to say unless you know for certain it will not work...and you can back it up in spades.

I totally agree with Bovon.

He is doing a case mod after all. There is nothing that says shoo goo has to be used only for its intended purpose.
And, add another use for shoo goo, case modifications.

Agreed. Struggles, you're out of line. Shoe Goo (and the entire Goop line) are superior adhesives and work well for purposes such as this. What's wrong with a little improvising?

By the way, Krazy glue would work but might tend to "fog" up the plastic where it is applied, and it is a little brittle. Still, when you improvise you use what you have laying around. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
