IE won't load pages properly (with error), logging on,
or configuring my ISP connection is not working as well as it should,
OE have problems as well,
but windows explorer is doing well no probs at all.
The modem Is reporting errors and closes, all the while the connection is still on,
(you know the little icon on the sys tray). It seems that the IE cache (temp files) is corrupted, is set to 720mb,
and after a short browsing it start displaying: This page cannot be found thing when I click on a link.
I have to reboot and log on again to have it working for a while, and on and on.
So I decided to reinstall\repair IE and OE but I'm not sure of how it's done,
short of reformatting and installing the whole OS.
And this is my best ghosted image that I have, so reformat and install or repair,
the flip side is time! 9 gegs of stuff. I need competent advice, thx... ( I'm running wxp pro )
 :(

Very simple:

1. Clear temporary Internet files.

2. Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools > Repair.

3. Scan with Spybot after installing and updating it.

Bill, with respect, I honestly don't understand what you are talking about!
First there is no instance of IE in my add\rem folder,
now if you are talking about add\rem\wc the instance of IE is checked\installed ,
how do I reinstall\repair IE from there!
And what spybot has to do with it? and yes spybot is updated and the scan did not report any spy's etc,
and how do one clear the temp INTERNET file without deleting some needed cookies,
like the one that permit me to respond to your post, in the past when I did it,
I had to go to the trouble of relogging to all my registered web site and resubmitting my user name and password, huh! what a pain in the you know what ! So as you see I need further tutoring on this issue, thx Bill :)

Cookies are not deleted when you delete temporary Internet files as long as you use the Internet Options applet in Control Panel. Cookies are deleted separately.

Hi BipolarBill thx I've set the temp files to 10mb and deleted it's content ,
now I've a "but" question,
in the elder geek site they suggest to run sfc /scannow for the IE repair,
and I did the run sfc /scannow thing and after a couple of min, a pop up shield ask to insert the wxp pro into the rom bay,
(that was easy cause after a couple of years on a pc, I came to the conclusion that that was not a coffee cup holder after all, and what shocking a disappointment.!..)
so now did that and clicked OK, and the wxp pro install shield come up
I minimize it, and now on the desktop a scanning from sfc progress bar is stated,
but after a good 20 min or so the progress bar isn't moving at all ,
so by using my cursor I drag the scanner bar shield down a little,
and under it's the first shield with the request for the wxp cd,

at the bottom there is a button for more details,
so I clicked on it,
and a dialog box tells me that the wxp pro cd in not inserted or the incorrect cd version etc, etc.
And here is the "BUT" question.
The cd in the bay is the correct wxp pro cd, and the one that wxp pro is installed from, "and in mint condition",and my question is: " For crying out laud what is going on here" PS I did this a couple of times to make sure it's a problem and I got the same results.

If it's not the same drive letter that it was when XP was installed, you would get this problem.

The way to fix this is to open REGEDIT and drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Setup and set the SourcePath letter to the drive you're using now. It should read X:\i386 where X is the drive letter.

bipolarBill thx, the problem was (I don't know why)that the cd rom I was using was the cd-rw drive (slave,) so I just switched to the dvd rom drive (master) and it worked just fine so this simple switch resolved the problem, why that's so! It beats me!
You seem to intimate that the drive that installed the system is the drive to address this kind of situation, no!

So I was right.

The reason why is in my second paragraph. The registry has the DVD as the installation drive.
