Previous setup was an IBM T23 laptop with a Cisco Aironet350 card.... this setup had the "Aironet Client Utility" that allowed you to see the strength and quality of your signal.

My new laptop is a IBM T40, with onboard "Intel PRO Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI ". Is there any equivalent to the ACU or any 3rd party diagnostics that allow you to monitor your setup or even better if they allow you to monitor wireless profiles too?

I'm currently running Windows 2000, but will soo be upgrading to XP. Does XP have in built in tools that can monitor wireless signal strength / quality?

XP has more facilities.
Its wireless zero service can cause problems on some nics.

You can try other apps - airopeek , airsniffer , airsnort , ethereal , ferretsniffer or the elusive xsniff (brand new it includes just about everything (wireless stregth meter doesnt work with certain nic though and supports only 802.1a , b) - its an underground file - Russian sites only)

Thanks - that's the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Which one of those would you recommend that has a working Strength / Quality meter and no spam/pop-ups associated with it?

Personally Cisco's - simply the best.
Then xsniff - its basic but very very accurate...
LONG TIME SINCE IVE USED IT BUT AIROPEEK I THINK HAS ONE ITS VERY GOOD. YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO GET A FREE 30 DAY DOWNLOAD IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY?

ACU won't see a non-cisco card. Well, none that I have ever tried, admittedly only a few. Designed to look for a cisco client device signature.

For simple meter software Netstumbler is decent. You'd have to go to the site to see if your card is supported but they have added alot of cards in the last few months. Worth a shot and easy interface to manage.
