Question, if at boot up I see my bios say my is an athlon XP 1500+ and then I look at the amd packaging and it says athlon XP 2100+ what does that mean? Do I need to change some settings? Did I install something wrong? I did order an athlon 2100+!

What's the advertised frequency of the Athlon? Is it 100MHz, 133MHz, 166MHz or 200MHz?

Now - what's the FSB (Host Clock) frequency set at in your motherboard's BIOS? Read the manual to find out where that's set.

There was nothing on the box that referenced a frequency. The only thing I see is 2100+ in the top left corner in a black box.

I attached my readings from WCPUID.

If you go to the web page where you ordered it, it will say that it's a 133MHz CPU. That's what you need to set your FSB to.

holy ****! Somebody take this rig away from. I should not own a computer. I am a danger to myself. Heh heh....

Thanks a bunch man.... I will try not to be such a junior member anymore.

I will leave you be now and thanks again man.

You are not worthy! :p

You'll be an expert on matching FSBs from this day forward, no doubt. ;)

Mind if I threadjack a moment?

BpB if you're still following this at all, I had a question - do mainboards autodetect Athlon XP voltages? I've got a 1.45v XPM in the mail, want to make sure its not going to auto-fry

Thanks :t

And sorry for the threadjack :p

Every AMD board I've used so far has auto-detected.

Thats reassuring at least, thanks for the input.

Should be interesting to see how this all turns out in the end.

pffffft! Man I just an so glad I went on the forum and got advice. I would have never thought that at boot up my machine would say it is an Athlon 1500+ just because the FSB was set to 100?! Oh well, I guess I needed to learn sometime.

Ok, So I come across some extra funds 120.00ish bucks and was wondering what should be my next upgrade..... a new video card or some RAM?

Heres what I got now:

Athlon 2100+
EpoX 8RDA+
2x256 MB RAM PC2100
GEFORCE FX 5200(dont laugh!)

And what brand and type should I get of the one that you would suggest?

One more question. When I was installing my fan on the cpu, it sure felt like I was going to break something. I was afraid I was going to put too much pressure, but I had to so the clip could get on?!? Does that sound normal? I ask because if I upgrade to a new fan I want to know if it is. Is a case fan a good investment if I plan on overclocking 30%?

Get a Vantec Iceberq Pro 4 for the northbridge chip:

The NB runs really hot and needs it. Be sure to have one intake case fan and one exhaust. The Vantec Stealths are quiet and good.

That memory isn't adequate fo OCing. It's limited to 133MHz. That's fine if you're just upping the multiplier, but you should go ahead and get PC3200 Crucial for when you upgrade to a Barton later.
