I read some similar posts, but didn't see an answer to my particular problem...

I have a Win 2000 machine. (I built it)

Here is the basic config info:

Abit IC7 MoBo
Intel P4 2.4 (800Mhz)
Seagate SATA 80GB
Mushkin DDR3200 1GB Dual
Visiontek 4600Ti 128MB
Audigy Platinum Sound
Netgear 10/100 Card

And as previously stated, it is running W2k. It has been running well until recently. I have not made any notable changes to the system be it software or hardware. The only real change was using Spybot S&D.

The issue:
Whenever I run an update or install an app (that requires restart) or when I simply shut the mother down, it hangs for close to 5 minutes -and eventually shuts down.

I do use McAffee Virus and Firewall. Does this have anything to do? I have read that it could be driver related. I haven't installed anything recently, but could a faulty driver cause this hang?

Any advice would be appreciated. I can provide further info if I missed anything here. Let me know...

Strangely enough, I have the same problem on both my win2k machines at work. But one os was installed couple of years back while the other was installed 3 months ago. Both machines have limited apps installed.

How could this be a driver problem (as Baddog's post refers to) if the two machines are runnning different hardware?

I'm posting here so that I can follow advice given to L8NightHype.

Don't want to take over your post L8Night

what processes are running when you control-alt-delete?

by the same token, if you manually close your system tray apps one at a time, does the problem go away? this used to happen when there was a fax, AOL or update app running in the system tray.
