Very easy! Nowadays, Half-Life is very cheap and you can get $20 Sing dollars for that game here. And it's original...

You will need HL to run the free downloadable version. Both CS and HL can be bought as seperate retail games for a pretty low price nowadays, but even still, HL is the only one of the two worth money

no difference thats worth the cost, basicly ripping people off
also u can get CS 1.6 for free without having HL because its a beta just go on www.steampowered.com

i have the retail caus i bought hl with the retail like in it
well i always had mod and i thought, hmmm why not install retail

and i have to say i dont like it AT ALL
all the gun names are way different and sound so stupid
mod version have the original names.
also i had loads of problems with retail version, once it was de_dust and it said it cudnt find the map :confused:

after that i installed mod again and im keeping that

Yeah the retail doent come with many of the standard maps that are found in the mod versions and also the gun names are st00pid, due to them probably not having gotten a license to use em in a commercial product from the copyright owners or sumink

VERY nice link, xenon. :) I never knew this exisisted. I just got done playing Half Life off this. Only downside is you must wait for the game/missions to downlaod since it's streaming of the internet, but hey its free. :D Hope you all have DSL. :eek:

How do you upgrade from CS 1.5 to CS 1.6? Do you need to uninstall the previous version or Half-Life and install everything again?

No, download the steam client and tell it to run a game of CS, it will then dl v1.6, which doesnt over-write 1.5 and has to be launched from the steam client every tiem you wanna play. Also it seems to take a hell of a lot longer loading than the old non-steam CS did :(

No they haven't. In fact there is this HUGE show stopping bug for Windows XP users. You have to go into the folder of every game you download to make the hl.exe file run in compatiblity mode (Windows 2000 by the way). If you don't, Steam complains and says the server is down or cannot find game server, something to that effect. I didn't know about it for about 3 days so I was sitting there wondering why my 650 mhz P3 rig with a Vanta TNT with Windows ME can run Half Life/Counter-Strike but my 1.2 ghz with Geforce 2 and Windows XP cannot. I also have a friend with an AMD 700 mhz with a Voodoo 4 and Windows 98 and he cannot get the mouse cursor to appear in the game menus. The options like New Game and Load Game will light up as he "goes over them" but the cursor will not appear. Steam promises some of these buges fixed with the next release, I hope so. ;)

I just tried ti out again the other day and it seems much improved, only niggle i have is it doesnt seem to close down hl.exe when i ext steam /cs. Another annoyance is the crappy gun names in CS 1.6...but i can forgive that because of the inclusion of the Galil...now you can do your own 'Way Of The Gun' impersonation :D

never asked me for a key. I installed it legitimate and everything in 1.5 though.


And btw, there is a difference between retail cs and cd mod.

Retail includes a HL cd key and can be modded as though it were half-life.

Is the Counter-Strike from Steam even free anymore? I think it is now just a match-making service for people already with the game. And if you don't have the game, then you can't play. :(

i just downloaded it and it wants a cd key for every game that i try to open to play

The CD key belongs to Half-Life so you need to have a Half-Life CD key.
