Hey,

Blue yonder the ppl that took over from Telewest communications, internet is now offering the ASDL line which is a fibre optic connection allowing connection rates of up to 12 time faster than a 56K modem.
Has any one heard of this (In the UK)

What connections do every one else have here??

Yep, heard of it & peeps who have it love it.

Well, considering they were prolly stuck on a 56k that never connected at more than 42k, it's hardly surprising http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

RU sure it's an actual ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscrber Line?), not a cable internet service??? I thought it was cable. ADSL was through copper fone wires, I thought.

You'll only be able to have Blueyonder if they have installed the cable service wires in your street. In case you missed the hours of pneumatic drill work starting at 7am a few years ago, look for a little triangular service box outside your house.

Other than that, you are stuck with the more expensive BT's Another Dodgy Signal Link... IF your fone exchange supports the service.

So, how does it all work???

Well I checked http://www.blueyonder.co.uk for an explanation, saw this & now it's all clear http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

EDIT: An OC & modding shop http://www.tekheads.co.uk/ has a dedicated forum for broadband (now we all understand how it works http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif) that you may find useful: http://www.tekheads.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

::Wow that was a quick reply ::

The Blue Yonder connection is actually transmitted through a fiber optic wire...this is if u have the cable service installed in ur street (either an existing phone line or a TV package) The prices vary, as u can refer ppl to use the service...then u get the overall installation 1/2 price (£25 instead of £50) u also need NIC (Network interface card- Ethernet 10/100) with is usually £25 and u can buy it when they install it.

As for ADSL or wotever im not sure i think i was wrong and it is just called "cable" still...

To check if u can get it in ur street there is a page whrer u can enter the postcode where u live and find out if it is availiable www.blueyonder.co.uk (http://www.blueyonder.co.uk)

I'd love Blueyonder... it's in my street, too http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

...but there's not much point in getting it, cos my house goes on the market on Friday & I'll be leaving land-locked life hopefully soon http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

...but that means nasty 9600bps mobile fone dial-up http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Still, the pros outweigh the cons http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Oh yeah, your hardware quessie:

They're allright. Our Department has dealt with them for around 4 years now. They don't have a massive range of really exotic stock, but for the basics & good cheap prices, they're really hard to beat http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The 'ultimate member' bit basically means I spend far too much time here http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif

From the Forum FAQ:

Member Status Post Count
Junior 1-30

Posts in the Community forum do not increase your post count.

I live in Sheffield... somewhere in the middle of this lot:

That huge concrete lump at the top of the piccie is the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It it 5 minutes walk from my house & I drive past it every day to work at St. James's in Leeds. Grrrrrrrr! Why this job couldn't have been at the Hallamshire *sigh*

Well, I'm not at Jimmy's now, I'm at Leeds Uni, but it's part of the same project.

Internet access is going to be something of a luxury when I move, because I'm getting one of these:

But I can't wait to be free of commuting and free of lodgers treating my house like it's a student dive there to be treated like *****.
